It's not so funny now, Tata bounces back, Mysterious break-up

Nok Chernyim
A television comedian arrested on drugs charges for the second time in two years is finding friends hard to come by.

Wanida Saengsuk (Nok Chernyim) was arrested last Tuesday while crossing back to Thailand from Cambodia, where she allegedly spent the weekend gambling at a casino in Poipet.

She lost more than 15,000 baht at the casino, and to ease her stress bought some ice (crystal methamphetamine) and marijuana.

Some media reports say she bought the drugs right outside the casino, took some there, and was sneaking the rest back across the border crossing in Si Sa Kaeo when she was caught.

A border guard, who noticed her acting suspiciously, recognised her as Nok Chernyim, arrested the previous July for possession of illegal drugs.

Officers called her over for a search. They found .56 grammes of ice concealed in her left bra cup, and .58g of marijuana in a small bag.

Last year, the court convicted Nok on the drug charges, and sentenced her to seven months and 15 days in jail, suspended for two years on account of it being her first offence.

She was caught outside a Bang Kapi shopping mall while buying 2.5 grammes of ice from a dealer. Hua Mak police had paraded her before the cameras, along with her drugs.

On Tuesday, it must have felt like same old, same old, as Nok again teared up, wai-ed for the cameras, and apologised to her mother and teenage daughter, just as she did the year before.

She insisted, however, that she did not bring the drugs into Thailand from Cambodia. The penalty for importing illicit drugs can be death.

Last year, her ex-husband, funny-man Chitisun "Chusri" Phongsupachakrit, raised the 300,000 baht needed for her bail. The money, he said, was not his own, but loaned to him by fellow comics.

This time, however, he was not prepared to help. Police had set bail at one million baht, and he couldn't afford to raise such a large sum.

"When I heard the news that she had done it a second time, I was stunned. I felt sorry for our daughter.

"She wants me to help Nok, but I don't have the means," he said on television. "Let fate take its course."

Police have brought three charges against the comic - importing the drug, possessing it and possession with intent to supply.

After spending two nights in a police jail, Nok finally made bail last Thursday, after a friend offered a piece of land valued at four million baht as surety.

Before heading back to Bangkok, she asked the public not to vilify her family, and vowed to spend the rest of her life making penance as a temple nun once all the fuss was over.

She denied gambling while in Poipet, insisting she merely paid a visit with a friend.

Nok appears in the television sit-com, Ban Ni Mi Rak. Exact Productions boss Takonkiat "Boy" Weerawan, who makes it, has thrown Nok, 42, off the show.

Last time, he was prepared to give her the benefit of the doubt, and after the court had delivered its judgement, let her back on the programme.

Two episodes had aired since she made her re-appearance. However, this was her second offence, and she had now run out of luck. Another seven episodes are still in hand. He was awaiting word from Modernine TV as to whether it would screen them.

One option for the channel's censors is to blur her face, even though everyone would still know who it was. "If they scrap the lot, we stand to lose 1 million baht," he said.

"I have to ask who is being punished here - a comedian caught with drugs? Or do we have to also punish the people who work with her, and perhaps even the viewers?" he asked.

"I've removed her from the show, as she sets a bad example. As to whether I am prepared to work with her again, for that we will have to await the court's verdict."

Tanawat Wansom, president of MCOT, which runs Modernine, said Nok would be banned from his station. What form that ban took had yet to be decided. -

Tata
Superstar Tata Young, left, has made a return to the public eye after the flu laid her low following a recent tour of Vietnam.

Tata left her sick bed - "Tata yanks saline drip from arm!" said one racy television report - to the welcome news that the Vietnamese have named her as their sexiest Thai star, knocking from top place actress/model Patcharapa "Aum" Chaichuea, who held the position previously.

"I'm delighted to hear it, though I would not dream of comparing myself to Aum," said Tata.

She's not alone. Even to her friends, Tata comes across as frumpy rather than sexy - though as she told a television show this week, her weight problem is no fault of her own but stems from a thyroid disorder.

"Sometimes I get so anxious about what people are saying about my weight that I don't want to leave home," she said, adding, "I went through a phase when I took pills to combat stress, but no matter how many I took, the problem didn't go away. In the end I decided to throw the pills away, and focus on making myself better in my mind.

"I used to get upset when my friends teased me for being fat. But now I try to ignore them. If I can come this far without relying on anything, that's great. We must learn to love ourselves ... only then will we be happy."

Tata was pleased with the reception to her album, Ready for Love, which she toured in Vietnam late last month. It was her first visit, and she was delighted to find that language was no barrier to getting the message across. "We speak a different language, but my fans sing my songs so clearly," she said. -

Namfon, Stefan
A flirty encounter with a mystery student in an aircraft? Two best friends falling in love?

Reporters are keeping busy trying to pin down why actress Kullanat "Namfon" Preeyawat and actor Salamone "Stefan" Weeraboonchai have broken up.

Last week Namfon and Stefan told stunned reporters they had ended their five-year relationship. They said they were too busy working to see each other, and wanted to try something new. Both denied a third hand had forced them apart.

Unconvinced, journalists have suggested several explanations. One is that Stefan fell in love with his close friend, singer Matthew Dean.

Matthew laughed off the report. "They tell me I'm your new husband," he said in a text message to his friend. "I'm impressed. Stefan is handsome. It is an honour to be linked to him in the news," he told reporters.

However, he denied the pair were an item. "I have a girlfriend of my own, and weve been together just as long," he said.

Namfon said Matthew was a neutral party. He did not attempt to come between them. She will appear alongside Matthew in the Channel 3 soap, 7 Prajanban (Seven Street-Fighters). If Stefan has taken him as his "wife", she'll soon find out.

Later in the week, the Manager newspaper claimed to have found someone who saw Stefan getting snuggly with a young woman on an aircraft on Valentine's Day. Namfon found out, and blew a fuse.

Namfon has not responded directly to the claims, but is asking reporters to resist trying to find a third hand. She says he is missing her former boyfriend, and hasn't ruled out getting back together again.
