Singer Sarunyu "Ice" Winaipanit is likely to face charges of reckless
driving causing death after the pedestrian he hit in a recent accident
died on Thursday.
Police say they are likely to call in the singer to acknowledge charges before tomorrow, after doctors at Lat Phrao hospital, where victim Wichai Yaiyong, 43, was receiving treatment, said the man died late on Thursday night. His body has been sent for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
Ice says he is too upset to talk to the media. Media reports said the singer, who had taken on financial responsibility for the patient’s care, was shocked by his death. Earlier reports said the man was now out of danger.
The accident occurred on April 30 as Ice was returning home from a concert at a hotel in the Charoen Krung area.
Ice failed to break in time to avoid hitting the man, who was crossing the road in Soi Ram Intra 14 in Bang Khen district about 11.30pm.
A taxi travelling behind him also failed to stop in time, and ran into the back of Ice’s Honda CRV.
Ice, who denied he had been drinking, said the man was weaving across the road, and the soi was dark.
"He left the footpath and suddenly emerged in front of me. I braked and swung into the next lane to avoid hitting him, but it was too late," he said.
Ice turned up at Khok Khram police station the next day to give evidence, but police declined to press charges then, saying they were waiting for more evidence. A police source said Ice had been told to expect charges.
Meanwhile, hi-so actor Nat Thephasadin na Ayudhya is defending a preachy sermon he left on the internet about the dangers of drink driving after critics pointed to his family's less than stellar driving record.
Nat, a keen cyclist, last week joined a chorus of public criticism of drink drivers, after motorists in Chiang Mai and Bangkok respectively collided with cyclists on the road, leaving a total of four dead.
Nat said he took issue with the Thai attitude that everything will be alright.
"Every time I hear Thais say, ‘Sorry, I didn’t mean it’, I reply jokingly, ‘Never mind … next time try to mean it, so the mistake doesn’t happen again', ” he wrote on social media.
"Let me say I am sorry for those who suffered loss. I hope we can all stop deceiving ourselves and learn from this tragedy. It must start with you and your family, because raising awareness among the young will mean nothing unless adults are willing to [set an example] rather than saying ‘Oh, never mind’.
Nat’s preachy tone changed abruptly, however, after netizens pointed out Nat’s family connection with Orachorn "Praewa" Thephasadin na Ayudhya, an unlicensed driver who caused an expressway crash in December 2010 which left nine people dead.
The car she was driving hit a passenger van on the elevated Don Muang tollway. The van crashed into a barrier near the Bang Khen exit, throwing passengers from the vehicle.
Praewa, Nat’s half-sister, sustained minor injuries and was pictured calmly calling people on her phone moments after the crash. The Central Juvenile and Family Court gave her a two-year suspended jail sentence, which the Appeal Court later increased to three years.
Nat said critics were too quick to draw connections between him and the Praewa case.
"Those who are following the case should know it’s not over yet. We have the same surname but were brought up by different mothers.
"I believe in the justice system and that the damaged parties will be compensated and the guilty ones punished. I wish society would stop condemning me when I am not connected to the case," he wrote.
Nat himself hit and injured a motorist almost a year after the Praewa crash, though he has offered no comment on that scrape.
His Mercedes hit the back of a motorcycle in Rayong in November that year, leaving its driver seriously injured.
The Mercedes incurred minor damage, while the victim's motorbike was cut in two.
"I did not flee the scene, but stayed and attended to the victim. I asked onlookers to call an ambulance, and watched over him to make sure he was OK," Nat said at the time.
"It was an accident rather than the result of carelessness," he insisted. -
Sexy actress Irin "Pel" Srikaew has ruled out prospects of getting back together with her French ex-boyfriend, after the two fell out over religion and his habit of taking wine with every meal.
Pel said last week her ex-love, Syrik, travelled from France to see her again recently after the two parted earlier. When they split up the first time, Syrik left looking miserable, after Pel asked him to downgrade their status on Facebook to mere "friends".
"However, he stayed in touch and sent me messages from France, saying ‘I miss you’. I said well if you miss me, come and see me … but I never thought he actually would," she said last week.
Syrik started off on the right note, taking out Pel for a lavish meal on his return at a high-rise restaurant in Sukhumvit Soi 11.
"Syrik asked for another chance, and insisted distance was no big obstacle, as he could always take time off work to see me," she said.
But after spending time with each other again Pel said she discovered differences in values between the pair posed a bigger problem.
The actress says she likes to get up every morning to give food to the monks, as a way of making merit for her deceased mother and sister. "Syrik says I am mad and can’t see the point," she complained. "That’s a big thing for me."
Pel said she could not understand why Syrik had to take wine with every meal. "For him, every meal has to start and end with wine, and the rest of us just have to wait," she said. "I order fruit juice, but he says I am making a big deal out of it."
Pel told Syrik the pairing wouldn’t work and he went back to France with his tail between his legs.
In response, netizens say Pel could have tried harder to resolve her differences with her foreigner boyfriend.
"Talking things through with reason and understanding can solve most problems," said one. -
Tangmo, who frequently turns to Christianity to help her over her troubles, said she was deeply hurt last week when an unidentified friend revived claims on the internet that Tangmo used to sell her body.
Her "friend", who first made the claims last year, stirred the pot again in a social media post, insisting Tangmo has a dark past, though on the bright side, allegedly made good money out of it.
"How can you claim she didn’t sell her body? I dropped her off [at the rendezvous] I don’t know how many times … she made I don’t know how many millions of baht," her friend posted.
Tangmo, who has not rejected the claims this time around, said they left her deeply hurt.
"This is the second time my trusted friend has made these claims. I am crying inside. It feels as if someone has stabbed me in the heart," she said.
"I didn’t think it would come from the mouth of a friend. The first time should have taught me a lesson, but what do you do when I still feel our old love?
"Corinthians says we should forgive and console such a person, in case she refuses to let go of her suffering.
"For that reason I ask my followers to confirm their love for this person again. We should love our neighbours as we love ourselves."
Media reports questioned if Napatcharin "Ice" Preetakul, daughter of comedian Kom Chuanchuen, might be Tangmo’s backstabbing "friend", though Ice denied it.
On the internet, Ice said she quickly called Tangmo about the reports.
"I asked if she was OK. She said she was, and I left it at that," saying that Tangmo knew in her heart that she was not to blame.
