Workpoint stars hit the floods |
About 12 performers from the Workpoint production company, including funny man Bumrer "Note'' Chernyim Phonginsee, actor Bordin "Bob'' Kosolpisit, presenter Panrawat "Riw'' Limratanaporn and actor Yong Lookyee, were travelling in Ayutthaya when fast moving floodwaters swept their vehicle into a khlong.
Note, who recounted his ordeal after being rescued by residents, said the first vehicle in the Workpoint convoy managed to pass the area, but when his vehicle met the flood waters, it quickly lost traction and tipped front first into the canal.
"The water quickly rose to the roof. Those sitting in the back of the truck managed to flee, but for those of us in the cab of the vehicle, it was harder.
"Luckily, I had left the passenger window open, or I would probably be dead,'' he said.
"I was wearing a lifejacket, which saved my life. But I have a big body, and had failed to do up the buttons of the thing, so squeezing out the passenger window was awkward. I managed to clamber on to the roof of the cab, and called out for help.
"Residents saw me and slung us a rope to pull us to shore.''
Note said the initial scenes were chaotic. The Workpoint team hung on to each others' arms and legs to stop themselves being swept away by the force of the current.
"Bodin, who can swim, hung on to a young PR girl on our team with one hand, and wrapped his foot around Riw. Yong held on to another young woman on our team, who could not swim. Amid the chaos, she asked to be released. She was worried if we kept hanging on to her, someone might drown.
"Luckily, she was able to get to safety,'' said Note.
The comedian said he was swept off the cab roof, but managed to cling to a signpost, when he was finally rescued by residents.
"The water carried me away. I reached out for a signpost for safety, but the current was so strong I almost lost my grip. If I had been swept away any further, I'd probably be lost in the forest by now.
"I'm a big guy. Who would have thought the water could be so strong,'' he said.
When all members of the team were safely pulled ashore, they carried on with their journey.
"I was shaking, I was so scared. As I was fighting for my life, I thought of the King - who like us, helps people in hardship - and my wife and kids,'' he said.

Kasikorn Bank says it cannot be held responsible for the theft of more than 100,000 baht from a former actress's account, as she gave her ATM card to other people to make withdrawals on her behalf.
Apaporn "Oh'' Kornthip criticised the bank recently after a thief managed to take more than 100,000 baht from her bank account even as she kept her bankbook and ATM card with her.
She complained to police late last month that she had lost 118,000 baht from her Kasikorn Bank account on Sept 16, while she was on a visit to the provinces. The thief took the money from an ATM machine in Pracha Songkhro Road Soi 27, Bangkok, in 10 withdrawals.
She discovered the money was missing on Sept 25; and made her most recent withdrawal, before the money went missing, on Sept 14.
Police have examined security footage at the scene and say the man, who was wearing a hood, used a card and a PIN to make the withdrawals.
Oh went before reporters with Crime Suppression Division head Suphisan Pakdinaruenart to discuss her plight.
Maj Gen Pakdinaruenart said the thief probably used a fake ATM card, imprinted with Oh's account information, to make the withdrawals.
Oh said she complained initially to Kasikorn Bank, which appeared reluctant to accept any responsibility.
"The bank official who took my complaint asked me if I had lent my ATM card to anyone to make withdrawals on my behalf, which I hadn't. He also asked me if there was anything I wanted to admit to him,'' said Oh, who is contemplating taking legal action against the bank.
The bank, which says the case is still under police investigation, has now come forward to put its side of the story.
A spokesman said the bank reacted promptly when Oh alerted it to the loss. Staff checked transaction records and photographs taken at ATM machines where withdrawals were made from her account.
It found that in addition to the fraudulent withdrawal on Sept 16, three other ATM withdrawals were made from her account, on July 24, July 30 and Sept 14. The withdrawals were made by different people.
She later appeared on television with Maj Gen Pakdinaruenart where police showed pictures of these people withdrawing money from her account. "In the TV programme, she admitted she had given her ATM card along with her PIN to these people to make withdrawals on her behalf,'' the bank spokesman said.
"With this information and evidence, we have informed Khun Apaporn that the bank cannot be responsible for the theft because she had willingly given her ATM card along with the PIN to other people to make cash withdrawals for her.
"As a result, the thief was able to make a copy of her ATM card and used the PIN, which she had disclosed to several people, to make the fraudulent withdrawal on Sept 16.
"The act of giving your ATM card along with the PIN to another person to make cash withdrawals on your behalf poses an extremely high security risk and is in violation of the terms and conditions of the ATM card service agreement.
"All banks adhere to the same principle of not being responsible for theft that results from such misuse of the ATM card,'' the spokesman said, adding that the bank was cooperating with the police investigation. -

Former actor Athit "Riw'' Tangsawadrat is nursing serious injuries in hospital after his BMW slipped on a bend in Nakhon Ratchasima and burst into flames.
Riw suffered a broken collarbone and dislocated hip when his car failed to take a corner and hit a tree.
"The vehicle burst into flames, but someone was able to drag me out in time."If not for him, I would be dead,'' Riw said from his hospital bed in Nakhon Ratchasima.
He was heading back from a visit to his mother in the province early on Wednesday when the accident occurred.
The car was left a burned-out shell. Doctors plan to operate on Riw today.
Riw suspects he was tired and lost control of his vehicle, which overturned and flipped several times. A resident heard the noise and came out to investigate.
He dragged an unconscious Riw from the vehicle. Five minutes later, it burst into flames.
Riw said while he cannot remember the faces of the people who saved him, he would like to thank them from the bottom of his heart. -

Celebrity DJ and presenter "Krit'' Sripoomset is vowing legal action over reports that he asked an A-list star for the loan of 10 million baht.
Reports emerged this month that he had asked actress and model Patcharapa "Aum'' Chaichuea for the loan to help his business.
Both denied it. The same news stories said that on a shopping trip to Central department store, his friend Aum had pulled Krit into the changing room while she disrobed.
But the changing room rumour - which once again, both denied - hasn't upset Krit nearly as much as suggestions that he is hard up for a "mere'' 10 million baht.
Krit, who also runs a business as well as presenting a TV and radio show, says if he really wants 10 million baht, he can find it without bother.
"The rumour, which is untrue, has hurt my business,'' he said last week.
"I understand that as a public figure I have to put up with a certain amount of rumour and speculation. I present a ghost show, so some viewers think I'm into black magic.
"That doesn't concern me. I am confronted by plenty of similar rumours which are just as baseless, but choose to stay quiet rather than come forward.
"But where my business is concerned - I have a partner, and 40-50 staff under me - I ask for the right to protect my reputation.
"Customers ask me if it's true that I need the money. It isn't, and I don't have to piggyback on anyone.
"I've identified the source of the rumours and have asked my lawyer to take legal action,'' he said.
