FAITHFUL DAD, ATM ROBBERY, HELP FOR ALL, MALODOROUS SUSPICIONS

Pat Power Pat
The father of a former singer who is serving 50 years in jail for drug trafficking vows he will take care of his son until the day he dies.

Niwat Boonthongnoom says he was disappointed by the Supreme Court's decision on Thursday upholding the Criminal Court's verdict against his son, a former singer known as Pat Power Pat, or Worayos Boonthongnoom, 30.

The court sentenced Pat to 50 years in jail on two charges of drug possession and trafficking after he was arrested in a sting operation in Wang Thonglang district in May, 2004. The court also fined him one million baht.

Police seized from Pat, a Hong Kong accomplice and his girlfriend almost 3,000 ecstasy pills, 5g of marijuana and four tubes of ketamine.

The Supreme Court rejected a plea for leniency for the former Grammy singer, saying his sentence was already on the lenient side.

His father Niwat, who has visited his son in jail every week since he was incarcerated almost eight years ago, said he urges Pat never to give up hope. Pat's parents hugged their son after the court read its verdict. "Pat smiled back at us, but I know that deep inside he is disappointed,'' said Mr Niwat.

"He didn't want to show us his feelings, as he was worried we would get upset.''

Mr Niwat said Pat admitted his wrongdoing, and felt contrite. "His case file says nothing about us fighting the case. We asked only for leniency, but the court decided it had been lenient enough,'' he said.

He wanted his son to focus on the present, rather than dwelling on the past or thinking too much about the future.

"I tell him that we do not find happiness in our surroundings, but in our hearts,'' he said.

His son - a bachelor's graduate who completed his studies while in prison - would carry on with his academic studies, and teaching music to inmates.

"I will compile a file of the good deeds he has performed in jail, and submit them in a plea for a royal pardon,'' said Mr Niwat.

"But even if we are unsuccessful, we will never give up hope on Pat. I will care for him until the day that I die, or am no longer able to visit him. Then someone else in our family will take over,'' he said. -

Oh
A former actress has given a Bangkok bank a dressing down after a thief managed to take more than 100,000 baht from her bank account even as she still kept her bankbook and ATM card with her.

Apaporn "Oh'' Kornthip late last month complained to police that she had lost 118,000 baht from her Kasikorn Bank account on Sept 16, while she was on a visit to the provinces.

The thief took the money from an ATM machine in Pracha Songkhro Road Soi 27, Bangkok, in 10 withdrawals. She discovered the money was missing on Sept 25, and made her most recent withdrawal, before the money went missing on Sept 14.

Police have examined security footage at the scene and say the man, who was wearing a hood, used a card and a PIN to make the withdrawals.

Oh went before reporters with Crime Suppression Division head Suphisan Pakdinaruenart to discuss her plight.

Maj Gen Pakdinaruenart said the thief probably used a fake ATM card, imprinted with Oh's account information, to make the withdrawals.

Police were checking the ATM machine where he made the withdrawals, and the ATM machine that Oh used two days before the money disappeared, to see whether they were fitted with devices able to steal customers' PINs.

Oh said she complained initially to Kasikorn Bank, which appeared reluctant to accept any responsibility.

"The bank official who took my complaint asked me if I had lent my ATM card to anyone to make withdrawals on my behalf, which I hadn't. He also asked me if there was anything I wanted to admit to him,'' said Oh, who is contemplating taking legal action against the bank.

She said the bank should be more helpful when customers report theft complaints.

"Not only did the bank speak poorly to me, but they also tried to blame me for the loss,'' she said.

Maj Gen Pakdinaruenart said the bank should have taken more interest in the complaint.

"They have plenty of staff on hand to look into such matters. If they leave such complaints unsettled, they risk undermining public confidence in their banking systems,'' he said.

The bank could not be reached for comment. -

Pancake
Actress Khemanit "Pancake'' Jamikorn says she is available to help whichever flood relief cause needs her - no matter what their political colour.

Pancake joined the Democrat Party's charity football fundraiser in Bangkok late last month to raise money for the flood relief cause.

Pancake, who wandered around the stadium at Chulalongkorn University taking donations, helped the Democrats - who played against a team of celebrities, and journalists - raise 1.1 million baht. She was pictured alongside opposition leader Abhisit Veijjajiva.

The week before, Pancake joined flood relief efforts led by Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, at Government House, and in Uthai Thani and Nonthaburi.

She was pictured getting out of a helicopter in Uthai Thani with Ms Yingluck and army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha; and touring the township with the pair in the back of an army truck. In Nonthaburi the next day, she helped Ms Yingluck fry chicken wings and hand out the food to locals at Wat Chalermprakiart.

Earlier in the month, she was once again pictured alongside the prime minister as they raised funds for flood relief at a telethon-style appeal at Government House.

Asked about her flood relief efforts, Pancake denied she took part in the Abhisit appeal to quell speculation that she had thrown in her lot with Yingluck.

"I do not side with anyone, and am happy to lend support to any flood relief cause, as I can see my fellow Thais are in need of help,'' said Pancake, who has also performed at concerts in the troubled southern provinces to boost locals' morale. -

Ken
Actor Phupoom "Ken'' Pongpanu can handle the rumours he likes women of the second gender, or that he likes to visit massage parlours - but a claim that he is undergoing therapy to rid himself of body odour has taken him by surprise.

Journalists asked the newcomer Channel 7 actor last week whether it was true that his manager, Supachai "A'' Sriwichit, had taken him for treatment to kill his body odour.

"Do they have such things?'' he asked, surprised.

"I haven't been to therapy, treatment or anything of the sort ... though I'm taking injections, to get rid of my acne,'' he said.

Asked about a supposed sighting of himself at a night strip in the Ram Intra area, Ken denied frequenting massage parlours.

"I don't have much time for going out. Usually, I go for a meal with my parents, or play football,'' he said. Nor did he know the origin of rumours that he fancied women of the second gender.

"I don't have many kathoey friends, other than my manager. Maybe the rumour comes from him,'' he joked.
