Pel and the police |
Pel bought the second-hand Chevrolet Lumina from a car dealer opposite Tesco Lotus on the Rarm Intra expressway in Bang Kapi last November. She said the manager told her the car was a 2008 model. After checking the car's performance, she handed over 900,000 baht.
A few days later, the registration papers arrived, when she discovered the car in fact was made in 2005.
"When I contacted the car yard, they said while the car might be that old, the wheels were put on in 2008,'' she said. They refused to refund her money.
"I complained to Chokechai police, but had no luck there, as a senior officer there, acting on behalf of the car yard manager, helped cover up the case. The car yard manager dared me to sue, as he has no respect for the law.
"I took the complaint to a lawyer, who did nothing for eight months, and in the end made off with 15,000 baht of my money. I can no longer sue, as the case is now too old.
"The car overheats and broke down after just a few months. Months later, it is still being repaired,'' she said.
Pel has now taken the matter to the Consumer Protection Police, who are investigating.
Pol Maj Gen Poolsap Prasertsak, head of the Consumer Protection Division, went before the media with Pel last week.
He said the complaint appeared to be a breach of contract under consumer protection law. He had assigned two officers to investigate. -

Actress Panward "Peuy'' Hemmanee is having a tough time remembering the details of her latest breakup with singer Watthisit ``Tem'' Seubsuwann.
The on-again, off-again couple have been apart for about a month. That might have been the end of it except an eyewitness claims to have seen them together in Hua Hin, after they had supposedly broken up, sharing a boxed rice meal in Tem's car.
Tem and Peuy last reunited in April, when the couple appeared at a function to raise money for southern flood victims. Tem had just finished work on an album, though he denied that their reunion was intended to drum up publicity.
The previous St Valentine's Day, Tem called off their relationship after he took exception to a media report that claimed he was seeing Peuy merely to leach off her fame.
When the couple drifted apart again a month ago, Peuy was the one to pull the plug. It was followed by reports two weeks ago that the couple, even after they declared they were now apart, were spotted canoodling together in Hua Hin.
Peuy initially denied it, but last week had second thoughts.
"It's so long ago now, I can barely remember. I can confirm we did visit the seaside together after we had broken up, though it wasn't to Hua Hin.
"We did sit in Tem's car, though we weren't having rice - it was more likely a snack,'' she told reporters last week.
"The breakup hit me hard. I went out with a woman friend for a department store meal and ended up crying in public, though not in front of the media,'' she said.
Given their past history, she won't rule out the possibility of getting back together with Tem again. They couple still talk as friends, though they haven't seen each other since that seaside outing, which was intended to clear the air, and see if they had any chance of staying together.
"We decided that day it wasn't working, but who knows what the future will bring,'' she said. -

Model and actress Treechada "Poy'' Marnyaporn defends her right to dream of children, even if she can't have any biologically.
Poy, a famous transsexual, told a TV programme recently that she would like a family.
While she has no ovaries which would permit her to have children, she nonetheless would like to be a parent one day.
Her comments set off criticism on the internet that she was being presumptuous and fanciful.
Poy says she felt hurt by the criticism, but defends her right to dream of what could be.
"The TV host asked me when I was in front of a microphone, so I had little time to think,'' she said.
"I could have replied 'No, I don't want children,' and spared myself criticism that I was being presumptuous.
"But I spoke according to my feelings,'' she said last week. "Many people aren't in a physical condition to have children, but they can always hope. I can dream too, without having to tell anyone what I am dreaming about.''
Poy helps care at home for a younger brother and sister, who is nine years her junior.
"For nine years, I was the only child, and longed for a brother or sister.
"When my younger sister finally arrived, I cleaned up after her, plaited her hair, helped with the homework. I look after my younger brother, too,'' she said.
"The desire to have children is not dependent on gender, but one's potential, and responsibility. I want children of my own, but simply wont have the opportunity,'' she said.
Poy says her boyfriend Peerapong "M'' Kaoropthai gives her encouragement. "He says he will always love me, even if I can't have kids.
"But relationships can be brittle. I admit that one reason I want children is that I might end up alone one day,'' she said.
She had yet to decide whether to adopt or care for someone else's children, as that was a matter for the future.
"I hope the public will try to understand. I do not necessarily dream of having a family with M. I simply dream of having children one day, should the future pan out that way.
"But I am not kidding myself that without ovaries, I can get pregnant, because I can't.''
