Peck, Tanya |
Tanya and her businessman husband Peck Sunchai went before the media last week to discuss their divorce plans. They said they had decided to put their two-year-old daughter first, and try to bring her up as friends rather than engage in messy court battles.
Tanya said she has mulled divorce for more than a year since news broke of Peck's relationship with actress Savika "Pinky'' Chaiyadej.
The couple has spent more than a year apart, with Tanya looking after their daughter, Leeya, in the US. Peck pays occasional visits to Tanya and her US-based relatives, but is based in Bangkok.
This month news emerged that Tanya planned to sue her husband for 124 million baht, and Pinky, as the ``other woman'' who jeopardised their marriage, for 20 million baht.
Tanya, who returned from the US on Saturday on a flying visit, said she had discussed the matter with Peck, and reached a court settlement over custody of Leeya. As a result, she had decided to abandon plans for court action.
"I don't want us to feel vengeful towards each other or engage in lengthy court battles.
"But for the time being we can make do with the court agreement, which covers custody of Leeya, and sharing the cost of her upbringing,'' she said.
Tanya and Peck shared lighter moments together as they faced up to a large media contingent.
Tanya ribbed Peck about the cause of their breakup, suggesting reporters might like to ask him what happened.
But Peck clammed up, saying nothing about his relationship with Pinky.
"Shall I withdraw the threat of court action, or not?'' she asked Peck.
Peck, who thought she was being serious, was taken by surprise.
"Oh ... I thought it was over. The lawyer called just a moment ago,'' he complained.
"Whose lawyer?'' Tanya joked.
Asked why she had abandoned the suit against Pinky, Tanya said she acted on legal advice.
"My lawyer said any action would have to proceed as a package - against my husband and the third party.
"Once Peck and I were able to reach a settlement, I couldn't proceed with the other case,'' she said.
Peck denied Tanya's claim that he refused to divorce her.
"But having reached this point, I didn't know what to say any more,'' he said.
While he wanted his daughter to grow up with a mum and dad, he believed that as friends rather than husband and wife, he and Tanya could still do a good job.
'I've done the best that I can, and I'm willing to give up everything just to get her back,'' he said.
Peck said that after six or seven years of marriage, the pair still loved each other. However, the huge media interest in their relationship had put the pair under strain.
Asked if she held the same view as Peck on the media's role in their relationship, Tanya said Peck's own behaviour had a bigger impact.
In recent months, media outlets have published sound clips of Peck and Tanya arguing, and pictures of Peck sharing an embrace with Pinky. The material is thought to have been released by members of Tanya's fan club.
Asked if the pair could start again when she returns from the US, Tanya said she couldn't rule it out. "We may gain pleasure from being with Leeya again as a couple,'' she said.
Tanya travelled back to the US on Friday. She plans to return permanently with Leeya at the end of the month.
The scandal which resulted from her dalliance with Peck forced Pinky to take a temporary break from the industry. After attempting to launch a Bollywood career as an actress in India, she is now learning dance in Finland. -

A wealthy spa owner who likes to cosy up to celebrities is demanding an apology after a radio DJ claimed she takes her driver to bed.
Pusanisa "Praew'' Phongsapokin has laid a complaint with Khok Kram police after a throw-away line by celebrity DJ Kachapa "Mod Dum'' Tancharoen.
"Praew ... the one who established hi-so. This one's horny ... she chooses handsome drivers, and satisfies her cravings with them,'' he said.
Praew, who denied having relations with her driver, said Mod Dum's barb damaged her business.
"Customers called me asking if it was true. They couldn't believe it, as they know I come across as a quiet, well mannered type. How could I resort to such conduct?''
Mod Dum has declined comment, while police say they are gathering evidence.
Hi-so Praew is known for her ties to male celebrities, some of them less amorous than she lets on.
In late 2009, A-list actor Atichart "Aum'' Chumnanont threatened her with legal action after Praew allegedly used his name to promote her spa, and made romantic advances through an intermediary.
Praew booked Aum to appear at a function for her spa in Ratchayothin. Aum, however, who had yet to meet the woman, pulled out after objecting to the wording of an invitation sent to journalists.
Invitations to the event declared: "Aum answers wishes of 100 million baht socialite. Tonight, Praew reveals all about her relationship with Aum. What she says will shock everyone.''
Praew said she was misled into believing that Aum was "open'' to the experience of getting to know her. Before he rejected her advances, Praew had bought her fantasy object a diamond ring, and ordered a ticket for him to Dubai, where she planned to open a spa.
But it was all for nothing, because Aum refused to meet her.
Praew claimed not to have known about the suggestive way the invitation was cast by her staff.
"I'm saddened by the whole affair. It's as if both sides have been duped,'' she said.
More recently, Praew has linked herself romantically with model Nicky "The Stick'' Sura Theerakol.
Earlier this month, journalists were invited to the launch of the pair's production studio, the ambitiously named P and N Worldwide Studio.
In a strange echo of the spa function advisory suggesting that she and Aum had a thing going, invitations sent to journalists said Nicky would reveal his new love.
However, when reporters asked Nicky - famous for his nearly nude modelling shoots - if he was declaring Praew as his girlfriend, Nicky demurred.
"No comment. Today's function is about the production company,'' he said.
Praew admitted that while she and Nicky "don't have much going'', they talk to each other in more detail than typical business partners.
"Who knows what the future will bring?'' she said limply.
Praew admitted her staff had prepared the invitations, but claimed she was unaware of the wording.
"I am too busy running my businesses to follow such things,'' she said. -

Organisers of a Red Cross fair in Pattani are marvelling at the turnout for a concert featuring Channel 7 actress and singer, Kemanij "Pancake'' Jamikorn.
They say Pattani residents conquered their fears of the southern violence, and came out in their tens of thousands for last week's show.
When Pancake appeared, the crowd thronged towards the stage. One news outlet said 60 concert-goers fainted in the crush.
Soldiers lifted children in their arms on to the stage where they were cooled with water and given first-aid.
Older people were helped from the gathering, but organisers say concert-goers were never at risk. They say security on the night went without a hitch.
Pancake, who sang six pieces for the crowd, was overwhelmed by the reception.
"When I saw the smiles of the audience, I could see that they knew no one had abandoned them,'' she said.
"I'm proud I was able to give them moral support.''
The concert, part of Pattani's nine-day Red Cross 2011 fair, was held to raise money for the southern flood recovery, and victims of the southern violence.
Pattani governor Niphon Naraphitakkun said the 100,000 strong turnout exceeded expectations.
"Pattani residents in outlying areas are normally reluctant to come out night, for fear of being attacked,'' he said.
But on this night they put aside their fears.
"We invited Pancake so residents could get close to her and enjoy themselves.
"We also wanted to send the message that people of the southern provinces can live together happily.''
