Not such good fortune, From lead to support, Drowning in debt, Held on ice

Mor Krit
Celebrity fortune-teller Mor Krit is vowing to appeal against a Criminal Court decision that found he defamed R&B singer Saranrat "Lydia" Wisutthithada for incorrectly forecasting she was pregnant.

The court on Friday sentenced the young fortune-teller to jail for six months, suspended, and fined him 75,000 baht for the claim.

Mor Krit said he stands by the principles on which he bases his forecasts, and vows to continue reading the stars' stars - though he would appreciate if reporters ask celebrities for their consent first.

"If you ask me whether I accept that I was wrong, and am delighted with the court's decision? The answer is 'No'," he said. "I didn't mean to smear anybody."

Lydia sued Mor Krit (Sukrit Patumsriwiroj) for 50 million baht for defamation. In November, 2008, Mor Krit was asked on television about Lydia's stars.

Mor Krit said his reading of her stars suggested she was pregnant, though he did not know himself if it was true.

Lydia said says the forecast damaged her reputation, as it led to speculation that she had fallen pregnant to former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, a family friend, and travelled to Malaysia for an abortion.

Mor Krit fought back with lawsuits of his own against Lydia and her boyfriend, for 100 million baht. Lydia's lawyer said on April 30 that the criminal and civil courts had thrown out Mor Krit's case against the pair.

However, Mor Krit is also suing Lydia's mother, after she demanded in public that he apologise for the pregnancy claim. A decision on the case is due on June 4.

Lydia has also launched a parallel suit against Mor Krit in the Civil Court in Nonthaburi for 50 million baht, with a hearing set for May 18. Mor Krit reckons the court will have to wait for the outcome of his appeal of the Criminal Court decision before it can deliver its own verdict.

Speaking outside the court, Mor Krit said the moniker "Mor Krit Confirm" - which he delivers with an emphatic flourish at the end of his forecasts - was just a name, not an assertion that everything he said was true.

Mor Krit's lawyer, Sakorn Sirichai, said his client would appeal, based on points that the Criminal Court did not address.

His client would also persevere with the case against Lydia's mother, as he wanted to know if reading someone's stars should be potentially defamatory under the law.

Lydia, who was not present for the verdict, said she was relieved the case had finally come to an end.-

Guy
Actor/model Rachanon "Guy" Sukprakob has been demoted from lead actor to supporting lead in an upcoming movie - just as he predicted - after he criticised the director.

Earlier, Guy apologised through the media after accusing outspoken director Poj Anon of slyly cutting his scenes from a Thai/Korean romance, Sorry Sarahaeyo.

However, when they met on set days later to wrap up work on the movie, Guy refused to apologise to Poj personally.

"He avoided my gaze, I avoided his," said Poj.

"Maybe I was looking fierce, so he didn't dare approach me. He also pulled out of filming the final scene.

"He was lined up for two shoots. He turned up for one, but pulled out of the final scene when everyone comes together. He says he was committed to working on a soap opera, and that the schedules clashed.

"We shot the scene without him, as I didn't need him there. However, I have demoted him to supporting lead, just as he asked."

When their row broke out, Guy said he suspected Poj was angry with him for turning his back on Channel 7, where Poj had attempted to find him work.

Guy had told Channel 7 that he would appear in one of their soaps, but signed a contract with private firm Exact Productions instead.

"Perhaps Poj is unhappy with me for changing my mind. His idea of how the film will turn out changes from day to day, but from what I can tell, I am no longer in the lead role," said Guy.

Poj had not said anything to him about the change.

Poj denied cutting Guy's scenes out of spite over the Channel 7 affair. At the time he made his remarks, Guy was still the movie's lead actor. Given his conduct since, it was only fitting he should be demoted.

"It's hard to tell who should be the lead, as there are four principal actors. I can choose someone else. Guy shoots off his mouth, but won't apologise to my face." -

Toranong
Toranong Srichua, director of the loss-making disaster epic/drama 2022 Tsunami, has promised to repay the millions in debts he still owes after the movie tanked in local cinemas.

Speaking at the Civil Court in Bangkok last week where he agreed to settle with one creditor, Toranong said he would take responsibility for the wave of debts incurred.

The movie, released last year, made just five million baht, but cost 10 times as much to make. Toranong was left owing more than 50 million baht to five creditors, including one who took him to court.

Creditor Borirak Jirawirort and the prosecutor are suing Toranong for failing to repay a loan of 2.7 million baht to help him make the movie.

2022 Tsunami is about a big wave that hits Bangkok, after scientists' warnings go unheeded.

Toranong told the court he would repay the debt in full by September. Mr Borirak agreed that once the debt was repaid, he would withdraw his action. The court has called the parties back on Oct 6.

Outside court, Toranong - who was admitted to hospital with stress last year as he fretted about poor audience reception to the movie - said he had repaid 30 million baht of the money he owed, and would take responsibility for the rest.

He borrowed at high rates to pay for the movie, with interest making up 15 million baht of the debt.

"I hoped it would make money, but in the end it made a loss.

However, I will honour my obligations," he said.

While it did poorly locally, the movie was faring well overseas, pulling in viewers in the UK, Japan and Taiwan. -

Andrew
Actor Supamorn "Andrew" Cronin, battling drug charges in court, denies he has gone into hiding while he waits for justice.

Andrew last week reported to the Criminal Court in Bangkok for the sixth time since police allegedly found the actor with methamphetamines at an inner-city apartment on March 5.

Crime Suppression Division police raided the Palm Suite condominium on Phahon Yothin Road, Bang Khen. They found the actor alone, allegedly in possession of a small bag of ice, along with paraphernalia for taking the drug.

Bang Khen police charged the Thai/English actor with taking ice, and having the drug in his possession. He claimed the condo unit belonged to a friend and knew nothing about the drugs.

Since his drug arrest, Andrew, who is out on bail, has withdrawn from a TV soap opera in which he is appearing. For his appearance in court on Thursday, Andrew turned up with 10 or so friends to keep the media at bay.

While waiting to conduct his business inside, he posed for photographs with court staff, and played with his BlackBerry smartphone.

Outside, he spoke to journalists briefly, in his first public comments since the fuss began.

Asked if he was hiding himself from the public, Andrew said he was still getting plenty of work, and showing up at industry functions where he is booked to appear.

"My bosses don't mind," he said.

"They have given me an opportunity to prove myself. Other than that, I'm ready to return to work making lakorn [TV dramas]."
