Not Depressed, It's time for rest, Not pregnant yet

Jack
Doctor/former singer Porndecha "Jack" Sukharom, who died after a fall from an overhead footbridge on Phetchaburi 40 Road in Huai Kwang district last week, showed no signs of wanting to kill himself, friends and family say.

Jack, 38, was found bleeding from internal wounds in the middle of the road shortly after midnight on Sunday.

He was taken to hospital but died of the injuries sustained when he fell - or jumped - off the bridge.

Vendors who work in the area say they saw Jack mount the bridge, climb on to the rail, and crouch there for a few seconds before he jumped.

Other witnesses say they saw Jack climb a power pole about 200m away, but onlookers persuaded him to come down.

While Makkasan police have reached an initial conclusion that he took his own life, family and friends who gathered for the man's funeral at Wat Thep Sirin say he behaved normally in the days leading up to his death.

Tipsuda, his mother, said Jack spoke to her by telephone hours before he was found. "He had some matters to attend to, but intended coming home soon after," said Mrs Tipsuda.

"His new wife had given birth to their first child only five days before. When I saw him last, the day before his death, he said he wanted me to help run his new clinic, and was looking forward to taking care of his baby daughter," Mrs Tipsuda told journalists.

"He went for a massage, and called to say he had left the car in Asoke. He was going out to find something to eat before returning home.

"We can't believe he would take his own life, as there was no reason," she said.

Jack's father, Decha Sukharom, the former director of Decha hospital, said he and his son had grown apart. "I wasn't around for him, and I regret it now," he said.

Police at Lumpini police station were preparing to prosecute Jack on charges of detaining and assaulting his former secretary, Anchalita Ruangroj, 24, last November.

The secretary claimed Jack had detained and beaten her for four days after he accused her of embezzling money from his health clinic.

Jack's mother said he was deeply upset by the legal affair. "I told him he should take responsibility. However, he was determined to fight, as he believed he was the victim of theft. I took him for a week of meditation. After that, he seemed much better," she said.

Grammy singer Jennifer Kim, among mourners who gathered for his funeral rites, said Jack gave selflessly to others. "Once, I took pills in an attempt to kill myself. He was the one who took me to Decha hospital to get my stomach pumped.

"As an artistic type, Jack was sensitive and easily influenced by others. I don't believe he took his own life. However, it might have been a moment where he sat thinking, and mistakenly fell," she said. Police inquiries are continuing.-

Ness
DJ, TV presenter and singer Tanadol "Ness" Ninnoparat, who died of a blood virus last Sunday, aged 24, may have worked so hard he did not notice he was putting his health at risk, family members say.

Ness died at Siriraj Hospital of hepatitis B, related to a long-standing liver complaint, which flared up again at the start of the year.

He carried on working until he developed a fever and was admitted to hospital less than two weeks before his death.

He will be cremated today at Bua Kwan temple in Nonthaburi. Among friends who turned up for the first day of prayers were Grammy singer Palitchoke "Peck" Ayanaputra, and television chef Ajarn Yingsak Jonglertjetsadawong.

They described Ness as hard-working, considerate to friends and family, and a hero to many teen fans. He worked so hard that he forgot to look after himself, said his elder brother, Anun.

"The doctor said his body was run down and no longer able to put up a fight," said Anun.

Ness had left no parting words, but did scrawl a note when he was too ill any longer to speak.

"He asked me to give Dad a bottle of milk that was chilling in the fridge."

Peck, who knew Ness for seven years from the time they were training as performers for the Grammy label, said he spoke to his friend for the last time last month.

"I did not know he was so ill. He called to suggest that I study for a master's degree at Siam University of Technology, where he was also a student.

"We talked about his illness, and joked about it. He was so considerate. When my father was ill, he called him constantly to give him encouragement, and even made us a cake," said Peck, who wept as he spoke to journalists.

"Now it's time for rest. You don't need to suffer any more. You don't have to be so tired," Peck said to his absent friend.

Ness handled marketing for Ajarn Yingsak Jonglertjetsadawong's cooking school in Bangkok. Mr Yingsak said he had urged Ness to take better care of his health, but the young man was too keen on work.

"I knew he was ill with a liver disease, and he was allergic to the medicine they gave him. He was always taking milk of magnesia for his stomach. I urged him to take better of himself, but he loved his work," he said.

"It doesn't matter how tired he made himself, or how heavy the workload, he would persevere - he would work to the point where he forgot himself," said Mr Yingsak.

"He was one of the most admirable young men I have met." -

Ann
Country music singer Ann Mitchai (Jaraya Somboon) wasn't taking it lightly. When a gossip magazine claimed she was pregnant before marriage to a foreigner (no less), she sought medical advice.

"These things may not matter much to farang, but they do to Thais," she said.

Ann visited Wechakarn Hospital in Ang Thong province last week to get herself tested for pregnancy.

The result came back negative, much to the relief of mother and daughter alike. Ann's partner Wolfgang, a German, was not present. He's in China on business, said Ann.

"However, if I did turn out to be pregnant, he was willing to shoulder responsibility."

Ann, the younger sister of country music star Chaiya "A" Mitchai, was alarmed by reports in the gossip press that said she had put on weight, and missed two periods.

At Wechakarn hospital, where Ann called a press conference, the examining doctor said it was not unusual for a woman to miss her periods if she was under stress. It did not always mean she was pregnant.

Ann said she loved Wolfgang, who had asked for her hand in marriage. However, at the age of 25 she was still enjoying life in the workforce and wasn't yet ready to settle down with child.
