Who is Mae Moo?

An expensive lady, only sweets are made for sharing, maintaining cultural standards, a dream of a movie

Why share, when I can have them myself?
Nok Chernyim
A television comedian arrested for buying methamphetamines insists they were for her own use, not to share with celebrity friends as earlier reported.

Wanida Saengsuk, also known by her performing name of ''Nok Chernyim'', was arrested while buying 2.5 grammes of ''ice'' (crystal methamphetamine) from a dealer in Bangkok.

Hua Mark police paraded her before the cameras, along with her ice, and cannabis cigarettes they found when they searched her car.

She didn’t dare ask for society’s forgiveness, she said, but did apologise to her mother and teenage daughter for letting them down.

Nok says she started taking the drug less than a year ago, to relieve tension caused by lack of work.

After being caught she promptly confessed, and felt much better. Police also arrested the dealer.

Journalists' hopes that she might point the finger at other drug takers in the celebrity set came to nothing.

One report quoted Nok as saying that she bought the cannabis to share with acting friends on the set of a soap opera. Having seen the error of her ways, she took the opportunity to warn the dara set of the dangers of using drugs.

However, Nok says she was misquoted, and insists she bought them for her own use.
Giving a wai before the cameras, Nok, 39, says she had no intention of telling her friends that she took drugs, or selling them.

Her former husband, funny-man Chitisun ''Chusri'' Phongsupachakrit, raised the 300,000 baht for her bail. The money, he said, was not his own, but loaned to him by fellow comics.

They were not prepared to turn up before the cameras, as they were worried it would hurt their image. ''I came to the police station because I was afraid that she would have nobody,'' he said.

However, 11 fellow comics did turn up later in the day, to lend moral support. -

Poy
Famous woman of the second gender, Treechada ''Poy'' Marnyaporn, has passed up the chance to appear in the second instalment of the kathoey comedy, Hor Taew Taek.

Director Poj Anon, who is making the sequel, Hor Taew Taek Haek Krajerng, says Poy asked if she could appear – as a ''real'' woman, rather than a kathoey.

Poy has changed her sex, so it was only fitting that she would want to play a woman, even if it is a movie about kathoey. Apart from that, her agent won’t allow the former Miss Tiffany Universe 2004 winner to play ladyboys.

''I had no problem with that,'' said Poj, who let her join the film, and wrote for her a part as the female lead, playing a woman.

Initially, Poy was happy to take the job no matter how little it paid, he says. Later, however, talks stumbled over appearance fees, which Poy said were too low. Finally Poy refused to take Poj’s calls after he declined to up his offer.

''I told Poy I could afford to pay her 20,000 baht a day. Spread over 20 days, that’s 400,000 baht. But her agent, after calling Poy's Mum, said it was still too little, and asked for 35,000 baht a day.

''I cast Poy in my 2006 movie Chai Lay (Dangerous Flowers), but had forgotten that she could be such a handful. She asked for too much money back then, too.

''So I decided that as I wrote the part for a real woman, I may as well cast one,’ said the sharp-tongued Poj, who started looking for someone else.

He has now cast actress Saipan Apinya Sakuljaroensuk as the female lead instead. Filming starts in October. -

If we think cultural values are on the slide, let’s get the state to set things right!

Putting in an unlikely plug for traditional values, a gay activist wants the Ministry of Culture to declare that Thais should respect their parents.

Natee Teerarojjanapong, also head of a cultural group in Chiang Mai, is appalled by the ongoing row between country music singer Sorapob ''Petch'' Leelamekin and his family.

He wants Petch to say sorry to his dad for calling him a sexual deviant, and urges the ministry to remind the nation’s youth how to behave.

Petch’s father, former actor Kraisorn Leelamekin, is suing his son for the deviant remark, in the hope court action will force Petch to get psychiatric care.

Earlier, Petch, 22, accused his dad and other family members of killing his mum.

Kraisorn was married to the former queen of Thai country music, the late Poompuang Duangjan, who died in her 30s from an auto-immune disorder.

She and Kraisorn had one child, Petch, who left home at age 18 to live with his girlfriend, took up the dreaded cigarettes and alcohol, and has barely spoken to his father since.

Petch's debauched conduct has upset Gay Natee, as the activist is also known.

''The Ministry of Culture must say whether Thais should respect their parents and ancestors – or feel free to criticise them,'' says Natee, speaking as secretary of Chiang Mai Culture, which upholds traditional values and clean living (no excess, please) among youth.

Asked whether he was interfering in a family dispute which should remain private, Natee says all Thais have an interest in the outcome.

His friend Kraisorn recently resigned an executive position with Chiang Mai Culture, as he was worried that his row with Petch set a bad example.

At Natee’s press conference, a fanclub of the boy’s late mother, ''Fans of Poompuang Who Love Gratitude'' held aloft placards proclaiming the word ''Gratitude'' – should the message still be lost on poor Petch, that his conduct falls short of what they expect from a dutiful son.

The group even has its own Poompuang lookalike, Chulampa ''Nam Pueng'' Sornsati, who like the former superstar also sings, and cried before the cameras.

With gay Natee’s support, Nam Peung – dubbed by her fans as Poompuang 2 - petitioned ministry head Theera Salakpetch to step in to the row. Belleagured Petch has yet to respond. -

Nathan
Self-styled ''people’s detectives'' are hot on the trail of Nathan Oman, a former Thai singer who claims he is making a Hollywood blockbuster, The Prince of Red Shoe, with Bruce Willis and Christina Ricci.

At the Pantip webboard, Thais have left hundreds of posts probing Nathan’s claims about the three-part fantasy epic. He claims he has been making it in the Arabian desert with a cast of 500 for most of the year.

Several news outlets spoke to Nathan this week after he returned to Bangkok for a break in filming.

Nathan says the film is directed by Wolfgang Peterson for 20th Century Fox, though it appears to be lost in action: no record of the film can be found on the internet.

Some Pantip sleuths also contacted the film studio, and Ricci’s agent. No one had heard of the film, they said.

Nathan has yet to respond to doubts hanging over the tale. The former RS Promotion singer says he was offered 100 million baht for his role as a young fisherman. Bruce Willis coaches him, he says. Ricci is caring.

Nathan, who says he is half-Thai, half-Nepalese, claims the film is based on a short story he wrote about his own life.

Before Hollywood expressed an interest, he says the story won a United Nations award. He says he is returning overseas this week to resume work on the film. -

Boom
Actress Panadda ''Boom'' Wongphudee is getting her breasts realigned, as she is worried they have started to look lopsided.

''I am stubborn...I lift heavy objects, despite the doctor's warnings to avoid such strain.

''Whether I am lugging heavy shopping bags, or even lifting people on set, I like to do everything myself.

''Unfortunately, it has thrown my breasts out of kilter, so I have to go back to the doctor to get them fixed.

''This is a common problem for women who get their breasts done, if they ignore the warnings,'' she says.

The Miss Thailand 2001 winner is feeling chastened. ''The price of getting them reset is as much as I paid to get them lifted in the first place, so I telling myself not to be so stubborn next time,'' she says.
