U-four's U-turn, apology writ large, show goes on

Not so Sunny for Own
Own, Sunny
Katoey singer Sunny U-four has offered a half-hearted apology to Thais for spinning a tale about how she and a young admirer hoped to get married.

After a dramatic falling out on social media last week, in which she threatened to do physical harm to her admirer Peerapat "Own" Jetapai, Sunny went before reporters to admit she and Own had concocted a tale about their impending marriage to propel him into the spotlight.

The pair never intended to get married when they made their announcement late last year. In a sign of the deception at work, Own, 18 years her junior, presented Sunny with a 200 baht engagement ring. No one asked them at the time if their love was real.

Last week Sunny admitted she and Own, in connivance with his family, decided to make up the story about their marriage plans to garner publicity and help ease his entry to the entertainment industry.

They kept putting off the marriage date, while trading on the stories about their supposed relationship, waiting for the day when someone in the industry would notice and sign him up.
Ironically, Own's dreams have now come true, assuming his reputation survives the current melee.

Last Monday he signed several lucrative contracts to appear in television lakorn.

The catalyst for their falling out occurred on May 22 when Sunny, who admits she made the mistake of falling in love with Own, and attempted to test his feelings for her.

At a Grammy function to launch a TV lakorn, she refused to take him before the cameras for a joint interview. On the way back, Own said he resented the treatment.

"He felt inferior to the celebrities he saw milling around, and asked why, even after several nose jobs, he was failing to make any impact. I told him that he has nothing to worry about compared to my looks, and urged him to give it more time. However, when he got home he sent me a message calling off our relationship.

"I loved him, but he didn't love me," she said.

Own and Sunny fell into a heated exchange in which Own revealed details of their plot to dupe the public, and Sunny threatened to do him harm.

Going before reporters last week, Sunny said that after several days of reflection she realised she was not angry with Own, and in fact wanted him to come back to her. "No one can take care of you as well as I can," she said, in remarks addressed to him.

"I erred in duping the public, but I made an even bigger mistake in falling in love with him, because I felt as if I had to test his love. Apart from that, he was about to sign several contracts, and I knew I would have to take responsibility if things failed to work out."

Defending her decision to lie, Sunny said the entertainment industry was full of deception. She herself had entered the industry years ago by conning the public, but knew it did nobody any great harm.

"But one day I asked myself whether I could carry on. My life as a katoey is fake, from my head down to my toes. I didn't want any more," she said.

Own says he is willing to accept Sunny's apology, but seems unwilling to return to their relationship of old.

"My family and I forgive you, and thank you for coming clean with the public. So that's that. As far as my future in the industry is concerned, I would like to have a go, but I admit it is unlikely to be my main line of work. I will see what the future brings," he wrote. -

2. Billboard for May's birthday
The billboard
Actress Pichanak "May" Sakakorn has accepted an apology offered by her former boyfriend, who erected a large billboard in the city to wish her happy birthday last week.

May took to social media to thank her former policeman boyfriend, Thititsan "Joe" Uthanapol, for his lavish apology, which appears on a large billboard carrying her photograph which he had erected close to Victory Monument to mark her 34th birthday.

Joe backed that up with a message on social media, in which he apologises for his rash behaviour including episodes in which he allegedly instigated friends to abuse her on social media, and asked a junior policeman to dog her tail on a visit to Hua Hin.

"At first I felt slighted, upset, whatever I said was over the top. I am sorry for everything, and take full responsibility. I feel sorry that I made everyone so disappointed in me," he wrote.

Replying on social media, May thanked her former boyfriend for his generosity. "I have waited for your apology for a long time, and it’s the best present you have given me this year," she said.

Media reports showed May celebrating her birthday with another former boyfriend, young hi-so Tanos "Palm" Leesavan.

She said the two have been through many things together are now just friends. She has no idea what it would be like to rekindle an old flame. "I don’t know … but I like things the way they are," she said. -

3. Chompoo's Cannes mishap
Chompoo
Actress and presenter Chompoo Araya A Hargate put a brave face on her unfortunate show at the Cannes film festival last week when she was swamped by onlookers as she attempted to walk the red carpet.

Guards released the cordon keeping back the crowds on both sides of the carpet as Chompoo, who was placed last among the celebrities and product ambassadors strutting their stuff, was still striking poses for photographers.

Chompoo, who is Thai-British, was appearing on the second day of the festival as brand ambassador for the L’Oreal cosmetics giant, her third year in Cannes representing the brand.

In her first year, she was criticised for appearing less than Thai.

She wore a European haute couture dress, failed to wai for the cameras, and even wore blue contacts in her eyes to disguise her Asian roots, netizens carped.

This year’s performance was perhaps worse than the first, as she could barely be seen amid the hubbub as she presented her pale, multilayered dress with pretty floral decorations.

Netizens, however, are full of praise for the doughty star. Her smile barely flickered even as the crowds swarmed the carpet, getting in her way as she attempted to show off her outfit.

"She was an utter professional, showing she could cope with anything and still carry on with the show," one fan enthused. Thai beauty blogger, Mhunoiii, also invited to Cannes by L’Oreal, spoke to Chompoo before her return to Bangkok.

"She failed miserably with the guards’ decision to release the crowd before the models had finished walking the carpet," she said.

"She cried all night, as he had prepared her dress, her face and hair immaculately, and put a lot of thought into it.

"In the end she was let down by the organisers, and their decision to place her last in the queue."

Chompoo has yet to comment on her Cannes mishap.
