TAKING THE PLUNGE, TRYING TO HELP, WHERE'S MY MONEY?

Tono, Tangmo
A top furniture maker has abruptly dropped activist actor Pakin "Tono" Kumvilaisak as a presenter, but Tono says he didn’t need the money anyway.

Tono confirmed last week Koncept Furniture had cancelled his two-year, multimillion-baht contract, amid reports the firm was tired of dealing with his poor public image. It has replaced him with squeaky clean actor Mario Maurer.

The contract was worth tens of millions of baht, but money, says Tono, is not important.

"For me, I am not fussed about the money, as that’s not where I find my happiness," he said. Tono’s image has taken a battering since he started going out with activist actress Pattarida "Tangmo" Patcharaweerapong last year.

These days, the pair are better known for their remarks on the People’s Democratic Reform Committee protest stage than their work.

Tono said while the loss of the contract was not important, he understood the company’s decision to drop him as its public face. "Mario has a good name, is cute and his work is well accepted," he said.

News of the setback comes days after Tono and Tangmo attempted to give themselves a new start by taking part in a baptismal ceremony at the Bangkok Christian College in Silom.

The couple, who admitted last week they are now living together, were engaged late last year in a photographic studio done up to look like a church.

Tangmo has long been a Christian, but Tono decided to convert from Buddhism to Christianity on the day of his engagement to bring his religion in line with that of his betrothed.

They have now taken their commitment to Christianity a step further, by taking part in the baptismal ceremony on March 2 presided over by the Binding Hearts Church.

The couple spent an hour listening to a lecture along with friends and family before being presented with a certificate. The baptismal ceremony, in which they were submerged in the school pool, took another half an hour.

Emerging from the pool, outspoken Tangmo said she hoped their baptism would give her and Tono a new start.

"My behaviour has changed markedly in the past month or so," she told reporters, referring to a series of well-publicised dramas in which she was chastised for hitting out at her online critics.

"I would like to take this opportunity to apologise to anyone I have wronged. In the past month I have let fly at various people. But getting immersed today lets me discard my past life, and start again. From this day on I shall be a new person," she said, tears welling in her eyes.

Asked how she squares her Christian faith with the couple’s admission they are living together before marriage, Tangmo said she was sure the Lord was teaching her well.

Tono is just as keen on his new calling. "Nothing gives me greater pleasure than seeing my girlfriend open up and head down a sound path in life," he said. "We want to be good people who help society, as far as we are able."

Netizens, however, ask whether the couple’s baptism is not just a publicity stunt.

"The PDRC is close to defeat, and the pair of you are worried you will soon have nowhere left to stand in society. That’s why you have chosen to turn over a new leaf. But you’re too late, Tangmo … you can sell your name no longer," one wrote.

"For as long as your mouth is unmuzzled, and you speak before you think, you will have to take responsibility for your unkind words,’’ said another.

‘‘Go ahead and do good deeds, but it is Thais nationwide, not the Lord, who decides whether to forgive you or not!’’ -

Nui
Rocker Ampon "Nui" Lampoon is denying reports he put 500,000 baht towards helping debt-stricken farmers, after a red shirt website congratulated him on his generosity.

Nui, a fan of the anti-government People’s Democratic Reform Committee, said he donated only 10,000 baht to the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives campaign to raise 20 billion baht for farmers, not the 500,000 baht alleged.

The bank is inviting loans and donations from the public. Those who lend money have a choice of two interest-bearing funds, and can redeem their principal on Dec 31.

A red shirt supporter published a picture of Nui handing over the money at the bank, and commended him for his generosity.

Nui is unhappy about the error, and in a Tweet to his fans is asking them to contact the website which started the fuss. He published a picture of a pay-in slip which the bank gave him when he left his donation.

"Please correct the figure on that website," Nui posted in the Tweet. "I donated only 10,000 baht, and even that left me out of pocket. If I don’t act now, the whole country will be disgusted with me," he said, without explaining.

At the ASTV/Manager website, a bastion of the PDRC protest movement, netizens are unimpressed.

"You must earn millions whenever you perform. What’s a mere 10,000 baht? How can you claim it left you penniless?" one netizen wrote.

"Disgusted is too light a word … how about hatred?" asked another.

"It’s just a loan, not a donation," another sniffed. "He gets his hard-earned money back at the end of the year." -

Kotee
Comedian Kotee Aramboy has turned to social media to call in a loan from a man of social standing who he says owes him 600,000 baht.

Kotee took to Instagram last week to appeal for the return of the money, after his friend — who he describes as a well-known figure occupying a senior position — repeatedly spurned his requests to pay it back.

The rotund comedian said he approached a third party at the senior figure’s request, to ask if he could borrow the money from him. "I told my friend that you would pay it back for sure, as soon as you returned from overseas," Kotee wrote. "He lent me the money on the basis of my guarantee, and I sent it on to you.

"When you returned, however, you refused to pay. In the end I paid him the money myself, which means I am now out of pocket. I phone, but you refuse to take my calls. You have put me off 100 times.

"That money took me ages to earn, and I have now been waiting more than 12 months. Please consider my feelings. When set against your good name and position, it can hardly be worth it," he said, without elaborating on what he would do if the debt still goes unpaid.

Kotee has since taken the message down. No word is to hand on whether his debtor has discharged his obligation.
