OUT OF SAFFRON, TOM TOM CLUB, MISTAKEN IDENTITY, UNLADYLIKE PUNCH-UP

Jason
Actor Jason Young has left the monkhood, 18 months after vowing he would stay there for life.

An image of a smiling Jason in civilian dress emerged last week, surprising his former fiancee and fans alike.

Jason posed for pictures with a fan at the Provincial Land Transport Office in Pran Buri district, Prachuap Khiri Khan, where he had gone to apply for a driving licence.

Media reports said a source close to Jason confirmed the actor had left the monkhood, but added that he never vowed to stay there for life. ''He just never gave a date on which he expected to leave,'' one newspaper said.

His former fiancee, Darika Chokota, said she had not heard from Jason.

She was surprised to hear he had left the monkhood -  just as his decision to forsake their month-long engagement to don the saffron robes for life, in July, 2012, also came as a shock.

The two announced their engagement at a function in Bangkok in late March, 2012, and had planned to marry by the end of that year.

Jason said he wanted to enter the monkhood for a month to make merit to his deceased parents.

However, after a month in saffron robes, he decided that he wanted to pursue religion as his life's calling, and asked Darika if he could call off the engagement.

Jason entered the monkhood in Chiang Mai, but planned to travel to Canada to pursue his religious studies.

Darika, Indian by birth and a Buddhist, met Jason at a spiritual retreat.

Speaking at the time he decided to enter the monkhood, Darika denied she felt upset about the abrupt end to their engagement, and in fact said she shared in his happiness.

''I was surprised when he told me. But when I recovered my composure, I realised this was an opportunity to make merit. I will release him from his engagement promise so he can pursue his calling,'' she said.

''I rejoice in his good fortune. He will have many opportunities to teach others about religion. I want him to stop worrying. He can stay in the monkhood for as long as he likes, to pass down the word of Buddhism.''

Jason, who thanked Darika and her family for making such a painful sacrifice on his behalf, has not commented publicly since leaving the monkhood. -

Mo, Kat
Actress Ameena ''Mo'' Pinij says she has grown distant from her tomboy husband after her family objected to their relationship.

Mo married tomboy Jirachaya ''Kat'' Kongnimit in Hua Hin in July last year. Mo wore a bridal dress, and Kat a suit.

The Channel 7 actress said their relationship came under further strain when she was spotted recently kissing another tomboy in a restaurant.

''I admit the picture of me kissing the tom has also played a part in us growing distant,'' she said.

''I'm not the only one who gets to meet new people. It's just that I'm more visible than Kat, as people know me better. But really she already knows what I'm like.''

Mo said her family could not understand why she had to marry a tomboy. ''How many families would understand after all? But given the way I am, really I'm just choosing my course in life. Do I have the right to make my own decisions?

''I feel deflated, yes, but I have to keep going. If you make a choice like mine, the road ahead is only hard. If you ask whether I can change my taste and start preferring men again, I could probably do it for a while, but in the end I'd end up back where I started,'' she said. She and Kat have been together eight years.

Mo said she is still trying to win over her family. Meanwhile, she and Kat are trying again. -

Mam
Actress Jintara ''Mam'' Sukhapat denies she was attacked by guards from the People's Democratic Reform Committee protest stage, and has threatened to take legal action against anyone spreading the story.

Media reports said an actress widely identified as Mam was attacked by guards after joining a protest gathering in Chidlom on Jan 13.

Mam, 48, however, denies the reports and says she is gathering evidence against those who spread the tale.

''My family and I had a meal at a department store in Chidlom that evening,'' she said.

''We dropped in to watch the protest at the Ratchaprasong intersection at about 8pm, when fans asked for my picture.

''Then we boarded a song taew in Siam Square, and headed home to Si Mum Muang market in Pathum Thani without incident,'' she said.

At the pro-protest ASTV-Manager website, netizens are adamant PDRC guards would never do such a thing, as they turn out for King and country.

Red shirt cable TV and radio stations were responsible for spreading the rumour, they claimed.

Meanwhile, a director who is taking part in the protests says the faithful are not only true patriots, but are prepared to do good deeds for toilet cleaners as well.

Poj Apiruj, better known as Poj Anon, said he was taking a break from the protest at Asok last week when he visited the toilets at the Terminal 21 shopping mall.

''Outside the gents I came across two cleaners. They asked: Are you coming again tomorrow? How long are you staying?

''I asked them why, and one cleaner said she had earned 1,000 baht that day, and she wanted me to come back again.

''I asked where it came from, and she said those of us who had joined the protest meeting had left her generous tips as they went to use the toilets.

''They got me thinking about our mass gathering ... not only are we helping the country, but we're also doing good things for toilet cleaners by helping them earn extra money.''

He ended his message on a self-congratulatory note: ''Not only do we love our country but we're also good people. I know there are many more of you out there ... why not join in? From a patriot.'' -

Ning
Actress and director Panita ''Ning'' Tumwattana has some good news on the legal front, and bad news for her health.

The Criminal Court last week decided to accept a defamation case she is taking against socialite Namwan Petnunthawong and her mother Ampaipan, after the pair accused her and her younger sister Nan of assaulting them at a city restaurant.

They say the pair attacked Namwan at Harvey restaurant, in Thong Lor Soi 9 in Watthana district, on Sept 20.

The socialite's complaint said Nan struck her in the face with a mobile phone, leaving her with eye injuries. Nan denies it, and insists Namwan hit her first.

Ning, who said the claims damaged her reputation, is suing Namwan and her mum for defamation. After hearing their evidence, the court has now decided the case has merit, and has called the accused to give their side of the story on Feb 17.

Welcoming the decision, the actress said the court asked if they could settle the matter by conciliation.

''Unfortunately, the other side hasn't made contact since this started,'' Ning said.

''As I said last year, it's tiring having to answer questions and being the centre of interest over something which is really quite silly,'' she added.

The good news on the court front is mixed with bad news from her doctors, after Ning discovered she has a thyroid disorder.

''I've had it for a long time, but the doctor only discovered it when I went to ask about stem cell treatment. He says it's the type that makes you fat, which fills me with dread. I've joked with my friends that I may not be willing to face the public again if I get too big,'' she said.

''I get numbness in my arms, legs and over my body, but it comes and goes. It might stem from the fact I'm tense. My husband has made an appointment for me to see a specialist,'' she added.
