NO BARS FOR STAR, OUTTA SPACE, EPIC SAVE SANS ELEPHANT

Andrew
Actor Supamorn "Andrew'' Cronin is breathing a sigh of relief after the Criminal Court threw out a drugs case against him.

The court in Ratchada on Thursday dismissed a case brought by prosecutors which claimed Andrew had taken methamphetamines, and was found in possession of a small amount of the drug, after a raid of his inner-city apartment in March last year.

Crime Suppression and Bang Khen police raided the Palm Suite condominium on Phahon Yothin Road, Bang Khen, on March 5, after hearing from an informant that a drugs party was underway.

They found the actor alone, allegedly in possession of a small bag of ice, along with paraphernalia for taking the drug. Andrew said he knew nothing about the drugs.

Reports emerging after his arrest said police tested his urine, which was positive for the presence of drugs. They took him to Mongkut Wattana hospital, which performed a similar test, and again the result was positive.

In testimony before the court disclosed upon its decision to acquit Andrew, the Thai-English actor said he shared the apartment with a friend, Bank, who on the night before the raid had invited a Thai man and Lao woman friend to stay.

After leaving the apartment, the Lao woman contacted police to say an ice party was taking place there. Police asked the woman to escort them to the apartment, and knock on the door. They did not find an ice party under way, but Andrew there alone.

Andrew said he was preparing to go to work when he heard the knock on the door.

Police pinned him to the floor, and demanded 500,000 baht to let him go.

The court criticised police conduct in the case.

It said while police claimed they conducted the investigation and arrest according to procedure, they nonetheless failed to produce the woman complainant as a witness.

Police failed to act as an innocent party in their handling of the search, and the urine tests.

Many officers searched the place, raising the possibility that someone could have planted the drugs, it said.

Police asked Andrew to submit his urine twice, but did not conduct the test in front of Andrew.

No neutral party was present, and no sample of his urine was kept as evidence. The results of the urine tests could not be regarded as reliable, it said.

Outside court, Andrew said he was relieved by the verdict, and hoped industry bosses would give him a chance to resume work.

"I have waited a long time to prove my innocence. I didn't want to upset my mother,'' he said in tears. -

Chompoo
Actress Chompoo "Araya'' Hargate can thank the man in her life for sparing her the need for a soggy-haired appearance in her condo carpark to settle a parking dispute.

Chompoo's boyfriend Witsarut "Nott'' Rungsisingpipat stepped in to defuse a late night row with a tenant in her condo building, after he unintentionally parked Chompoo's car in his space.

The tenant wanted her to sort it out personally, but she had wet hair and was wearing her nightdress at the time, so thought better of it.

Asked to comment on the row, Chompoo denied Nott and the tenant had words, or that she was forced to step in to defuse it.

They settled it like men, she said approvingly.

Chompoo said she had gone out with Nott, but instead of taking her car back home, asked Nott to drive it back for her.

"He didn't know which space was mine, saw plenty of vacant carparks there, so parked it in a space place close to the lift,'' she said.

The next day, Chompoo travelled to Korat to make a soap opera. In the early evening, a security guard from the condo called, asking her to move the car, after the owner of the space complained.

"I replied I was in the provinces, but would move the car when I returned to Bangkok,'' she said.

When she returned later that evening, she took a shower, and heard the phone ring. The guard asked her to move the car, so she went down and shifted the vehicle to her own parking space.

However, the phone went a second time, with the guard saying the owner of the original space wanted to talk to her. "My hair was wet and I was wearing night clothes. I was a woman, alone in her condo. It would not have been appropriate for me to go downstairs,'' she told reporters.

She called Nott, who contacted the owner of the carpark and offered an apology.

"News reports which claim Nott and I were too busy making out in my condo to attend to the tenant's problems are untrue,'' she said.

"I was at home alone and Nott was in Ayutthaya, but he still managed to fix the problem, as he and the tenant spoke man to man,'' she said. -

Wanchana
Actor Wanchana Sawasdee dived into a reservoir to save a woman who was thinking of taking her own life and that of her toddler child, but denies he is a hero.

Lt Col Wanchana, best known for playing King Naresuan the Great in the historical epic directed by MC Chatrichalerm Yukol, says he was filming a royal development project documentary in Chachoengsao recently when a security guard asked for his help.

"I was standing by a reservoir with the production crew when a security guard approached on a motorbike to say he had seen a young woman with her infant who looked as if they were in trouble,'' he said.

The girl was standing with her child, aged about three, on the banks of the reservoir, crying.

Lt Col Wanchana said the woman started heading into the water, carrying the child. He called out to her, but she refused to listen. "She was heading further and further into the reservoir, so I took off my shoes and socks and waded in after her,'' he said.

He and members of his crew persuaded the woman to return to the bank.

"She said she had argued with her grandmother, and was upset,'' he said.

The crew contacted her boyfriend, who came to pick her up.

Lt Col Wanchana said the woman did not know him from his role in the movies, and he denies he deserved any special praise.

"Many young people who find themselves in a tight spot might be tempted to seek easy solutions to their problems,'' he said, urging families to show more compassion for each other.

"Everyone has the potential to do something heroic; its just that not all of us have the opportunity,'' he said.

"For me, serving as an example to youth is more important.''
