RED SHOE RASCAL BEHIND BARS, UNREQUITED ADVANCES

Former singer and would-be Hollywood star Nathan Oman, arrested last Wednesday on a charge of fraud, is shrugging off his first experience of a police cell, where he spent the night after police denied bail.

''Police gave me special care. They let members of my fan club visit me. I did not have nightmares, but slept soundly, as I had already come to terms with what it might be like,'' he said stoically.

''I had seen jails in the movies, and thought I might have to spend the night with scary people, but when I entered the cell, no one else was there. Maybe they were put in a separate cell.

''I had actually written to the police and intended to meet them, but they found me first. They approached me as friends. We talked, and they brought me to the station. They didn't arrest me, nor apply handcuffs on the journey here,'' Nathan said.

The former RS Promotion singer who claims Hollywood is making a movie about his early life in the exotic Middle East was describing his overnight stay in a provincial police jail, after detectives arrested him early on Wednesday at a fruit plantation on the banks of the Mekong River.

Nathan was arrested at 7:40am, outside the farmhouse of a tamarind plantation in Chiang Khan district, Loei province. The place was owned by a relative of his foster mother.

Detectives were acting on a complaint laid in Amnat Charoen province by Nathan's former live-in housekeeper, Saman Sukserm, who borrowed money on his behalf last year. Police had called him in for questioning twice, but Nathan failed to show. On Dec 18, they obtained an arrest warrant.

Mrs Saman said Nathan promised to repay the loan, but never did. Last week, Mrs Saman said banks were threatening to foreclose on 16 rai of family land worth almost 500,000 baht which she mortgaged to help Nathan.

After arresting him in Loei, police took him to Amnat Charoen for questioning, where he was reunited with Mrs Saman, and also met the media. He was wearing handcuffs.

Nathan, she said, had been calling her three times a day for the past week, pleading with her to withdraw her police complaint.

''I am preparing to go on the interview circuit. The media will pay me 100,000 baht for every appearance. I'll use that money to repay you,'' he said. ''All you have to do is withdraw the complaint.''

Nathan, she said, had claimed variously that he was in Phuket, and Narathiwat. Mrs Saman contacted police, who examined the phone network, and found he was actually in Loei. She was unwilling to withdraw her complaint until he has repaid his debt.

Police set bail at 100,000 baht, or a third of the amount that Mrs Saman said she borrowed on his behalf.

Police questioned Nathan for more than 12 hours. He was a reluctant suspect, and denied borrowing as much as claimed.

Mrs Saman said that with interest, the original 300,000 baht debt had now ballooned to 750,000 baht. Nathan claims he borrowed just 170,000 baht.

Police changed their mind about granting him bail, as they were worried he might take flight.

Nathan's foster mother turned up at the police station with a land title deed worth 600,000 baht, to stand as surety for their bail demand. Detectives turned her down. While Nathan's foster mother cooled her heels in a nearby hotel, Nathan spent the night in the Amnat Charoen police cell.

The next day, police asked the local court for permission to detain him further. The court approved bail for Nathan, but restricted his place of residence to Loei or Bangkok, and told him to report to the court six times over the next month.

Leaving court, Nathan said he would fight the fraud charges, though he also promised to repay the money he owed.

Mrs Saman, in tears, said she knew nothing about the law and had no money to pursue the case.

Talking to journalists, alleged con-artist Nathan refused to be drawn further on the most spectacular claim he makes about himself - that he is acting in a Hollywood spectacular, set in the Middle East, with Bruce Willis and Christina Ricci.

In July, Nathan told reporters he had spent the past six months in the Arabian desert making The Prince of Red Shoes, a fantasy adventure directed by Wolfgang Petersen for 20th Century Fox.

He claimed he was getting 100 million baht for the three-part epic, based on his own life as an abandoned half-Thai, half-Nepalese child, growing up amid hardship in the desert.

Sceptics on Thai webboards could find no trace of the movie, and a spokesman for the studio, quoted in the media, said the film did not exist.

''That's another story, and not relevant,'' said Nathan.-

Praew
A wealthy spa owner feels chastened after actor Atichart ''Aum'' Chumnanont rejected her romantic advances - made through an intermediary - and threatened her with legal action instead.

Pusanisa ''Praew'' Phongsapokin says she was misled into believing that Aum was ''open'' to the experience of getting to know her. She has apologised for causing him distress.

Before Aum brought their fledgling liaison to an abrupt close, Praew had bought her fantasy object a diamond ring, and ordered a ticket for him to Dubai, where she plans to open a new spa.

She had also booked Aum to appear at a function to celebrate the third anniversary of her Bangkok spa, in Ratchayothin. Aum, however, who has yet to meet the woman, pulled out of the function, after objecting to the wording of an invitation sent to journalists.

Aum
He believes Praew has been trying to use his name to promote her business. Invitations to the event declared: ''Aum answers wishes of 100 million baht socialite. Tonight, Praew reveals all about her relationship with Aum. What she says will shock everyone.''

Aum said that after receiving their invitation, journalists had called him to ask what was going on.

''The invitation suggests we are romantically involved, when I have never even spoken to the woman.

''Journalists tell me that when they asked her to explain the relationship claim, Praew declined comment and referred them to me.

''She is being deliberately vague, suggesting there is something in the fire.

''She is using my name to promote her spa, and damaging my reputation,'' he said, threatening legal action if she carried on.

Turning down in advance her offer of the ring and air ticket, he said: ''It's as if she's trying to lure me to her side by buying gifts, which is undignified. I make my own money, and can look after myself,'' he said.

Weeks ago, Praew told journalists that she wanted to invite him to a 100,000 baht dinner. Later, reports emerged that Praew also wanted the Channel 3 star to travel to Dubai, and tread the catwalk at her spa anniversary function in Bangkok.

However, Aum pulled out of the arrangement after learning about the wording of the invitation. The same day as Aum announced his cancellation, Praew admitted herself to hospital, suffering from stress.

Speaking to reporters from her Ramkhamhaeng Hospital bed, she claimed not to have known about the way the invitation was cast.

''I am saddened by the whole affair. It's as if both sides have been duped,'' she said.

She confirmed that she and Aum did not know each other. She was the shy type, so had made all contact through her secretary, whom she had now dismissed.

''My secretary kept me informed about what Aum's camp was saying. I was led to believe that he was open and interested. If I didn't believe that, why would I order a ring for him? I intended to present it to him as a surprise.''

She was sorry for causing Aum distress. She had now learned her lesson, and would not mention his name in public again
