Spirit strife, my second wife, no coalition love talks, the martian look

Petch
The spirit of former Thai country music queen Poompuang "Peung" Duangjan came back to haunt her ex-husband Kraisorn this week, as fans of the famed luk tung singer marked the 17th anniversary of her death.

Poompuang's spirit visited him in a ghostly telephone call, and in a long-dormant tape-recording in which she criticised him from her death bed.

The drama started when the couple's only son, singer Sorapob "Petch" Leelamekin, 22, wearing monk's yellow, argued with family members in an undignified row at a temple.

Petch and his dad have barely spoken for years, but this year Poompuang's family came to dad's defence, and Phra Petch found himself under attack from all sides.

The row, caught on television, started at the temple, then spilled over to the media where it stayed most of the week. Phra Petch, who had entered the monkhood two weeks before, argued with Poompuang's family at Wat Tap Kradan in Suphan Buri, where the anniversary of his mother's death is marked by tributes and a concert every year.

"You killed my mother - all of you!" he charged, as his uncle and aunt demanded he apologise for unflattering remarks about his father. Earlier, they claimed that Poompuang's spirit did not really exist, which angered him.

Petch's supporters formed a ring around the young man to stop Poompuang's family getting close, as the shouting and screaming grew more intense.

The row started after Petch called for public donations to build a wax statue in memory of his mother.

Poompuang's elder brother and younger sister demanded to know who would get the money and how it would be spent. They are worried that if money goes missing, the family will have to take responsibility.

At the time of Poompuang's death, the famed country music singer's family were at odds with husband Kraisorn over her estate.

They put their differences aside long ago, they revealed this week, as Kraisorn and the illiterate former superstar's family - including her ailing mother - went on TV to issue a joint appeal to young Petch to come back to the family fold.

Petch resents the way his dad treated his mum.

Poompuang made a "secret" tape shortly before her death in which she accused her husband of being an uncaring husband and callous dad. A day after the temple row, some dark hand re-released it.

Recorded on her hospital bed as she lay dying from systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE, or lupus), the queen of luk tung claimed Kraisorn stopped Petch from visiting her, and told her that she may as well just die, for all he cared.

One gossip rag says that, hours after the temple argument, the spirit of a woman claiming to be Poompuang called Kraisorn to say she was unhappy to see family arguing.

Channelled by a medium, the spirit urged Kraisorn to reassess his behaviour and go vegetarian. Then the family's problems would sort themselves out, she said.

A day later, Petch called a radio show to claim that family were too busy looking after their own interests at the time of his mother's death to pay her any mind.

Kraisorn says his son's behaviour changed after he took up with a young woman he met at an entertainment company. They have lived together for three to four years.

Explaining the tape, he said Poompuang was feeling hurt at the time, as the couple had just argued.

At her request, he had given up his job to care for her, but after they fell out, he asked his family to look after her instead.

He regretted the way he treated his wife. "I apologise for everything. Poompuang's family has forgiven me. I just want my son to come back," he said in tears.

This being a Thai family dispute, everyone came out to air the dirty laundry. After Petch had his say, his girlfriend and her mother appeared to insist that all the statue money would go into Petch's bank account, not their own.

Kraisorn says the couple have brainwashed their son, and declares they will only get access to Poompuang's estate "over his dead body".

By late in the week, headstrong Petch - carving a career as a luk tung singer in his mother's image - had left the monkhood.

He apologised to his family, but asked to be left alone. He also denied being possessed by a bad-tempered spirit, as his father alleged.

He insisted he would go ahead building a statue for his mum, and would not return to live with his dad. -

Forecasts by fortune tellers about whether two stars are made for each other must have some use after all.

Saucy actress Panward "Peuy" Hemmanee says that since a fortune teller intoned early this year that she and boyfriend, singer/actor Anattapol "R" Sirichumsaeng, were not meant to be together, she has gone all out to prove him wrong.

The result? Their relationship has grown stronger, as she has taught herself to be less petulant and hot-headed. She now reckons he's a "perfect man".

R is a new darling of the gay set, since he started playing in the stage musical Mae Nak Phrakhanong, where he has to bare his chest.

"Once, they used to tease me about his looks, claiming he wasn't handsome. Now, phuying (women) and phuching (gay men) alike say they admire his new buffed look," she beams.

Yingmaen
"I'm no love coalition builder," says Surabot "Pleum" Leekpai, son of former prime minister Chuan, denying reports he is the third leg in a romantic triangle with two other starlets.

Pleum went before the media to deny claims that he flirted with model Yingmaen (MR Mannarumas Yukol), earlier seen going out with singer Payu "Storm" Clark.

"We are just friends, and swapped phone numbers when we met, as friends do. But it won't go any further," he said.

Yingmaen agreed, saying she had taken Pleum to meet her mum, but that was natural. Pleum's dad asked about her, but he was just curious, as politicians tend to be. It was too early for coalition talks.

Payu also spoke to the media, saying he didn't want things with Yingmaen to move on any further for now. -

Former TV star Athit "Riw" Tangsawadrat claims he has seen the light, a week after his former mother-in-law dressed him down on television for being a bad dad.

He turned up at the wedding ceremony of former actor Somchai "Tao" Kemklat with a new look - shaven head and eyebrows. To top it off, he was wearing a pair of bubble-shaped shades.

Asked if he was trying to make a Martian-like re-entry to the industry, Riw said he had put the mistakes of the past behind him and was now feeling brighter.

"I want to send the message that I am not hung up on hair, or eyebrows, or my appearance," said Riw, adding that he would enter the monkhood to pay tribute to his parents in about a week.

"I am trying out the feel of going without hair," he said.

Riw is helping his former mother-in-law raise two children by his first marriage.

He is also raising a third child with his second wife.

Last week, Riw's former mother-in-law, Supaporn Athsawakitimaethin, asked him for 10 million baht to help with care of the first two children. Riw said he paid his former wife Kae under their divorce agreement.

He would have to see about the rest, as he was in debt.
