Riw's a bad dad, Poy makes music, Tao breaks hearts

Riw
Former star Athit "Riw" Tangsawadrat has made a dramatic return to the limelight, though not the way he might have hoped. After paparazzi snapped him and his two children at a department store, the anonymity which he has carefully safeguarded since leaving the industry more than five years ago was shattered.

Journalists asked the inevitable question: "Is Riw now a dad?" Previously, few Thais even knew the former actor and singer was even married. Soon after, Riw came out to confirm the rumours - he is father to two boys, aged six and four, by his first wife Kae, and is now raising a daughter, aged eight months, with his current wife.

He was a good dad, he said, and would like the chance to return to the entertainment industry.

The moment might have passed without drama, except Riw's former mother-in-law, Supaporn Athsawakitimaethin, took exception to Riw's assertion that he took his responsibilities as a father seriously.

Days later, Riw and Mrs Supaporn - the woman he still refers to fondly as Mama - appeared on television to tell their story. As Riw sat dejectedly, Mrs Supaporn demolished Riw's portrayal of himself as a happy family man and devoted husband. Accusing Riw of abandoning his former wife and children, Mrs Supaporn said Riw had been a terrible father to his two boys, and had left her to take on the burden of care for the last four or five years.

"He sees the boys just once a week, and only then because they ask. When they were younger, he missed their birthdays, went absent on Father's Day. He didn't turn up for the birth of his second child, nor bother to take Kae to hospital.

"He was absent for almost a whole year in the later stages of their marriage, which ended when he started seeing a woman my own age. My daughter was so frustrated she attempted to take her own life."

Mrs Supaporn said Riw pays 30,000 baht a week to help raise the boys, though the money can be slow in coming. He started paying more than a year ago. She would like him to increase the monthly amount by 20,000 baht, or alternatively give her a cheque for a lump sum of 10 million baht. "In return, we'll stop bothering him, and he needn't support them again for the rest of his life."

Entertainment giant RS Promotion, Riw's former label, also comes out of the affair badly. Mrs Supaporn said that at the company's request, Riw and Kae hid their marriage from the media - which also deprived her of the chance to see her only daughter in bridal white.

At the time, Riw was in his mid-twenties and a star. RS did not want news that he was married made public. "They asked my daughter not to go ahead with a wedding. Someone could take photos of the pair, which might leak."

Mrs Supaporn admitted she had always opposed her daughter marrying a star. "Even when we were together, he was constantly on the phone, taking calls from members of his fan club," she said.

Riw, who these days is an investment adviser and runs a car wash and restaurant business, said he would try to do better, and pay his "Mama" what she wanted. The show ended with Riw, in tears, begging forgiveness at Mrs Supaporn's feet. -

Poy
Model Treechada "Poy" Marnyaporn, a famed woman of the second gender, is getting over those reports claiming she fancies singer Ratchapon "Music" Yamsang as a potential boyfriend.

Asked by the media whether they were seeing each other romantically, Poy and Music insisted they were just friends who talk to each other every day. The Miss Tiffany Universe 2004 winner looked surprised when told by journalists that Music was actually going steady with another woman, singer Phagkamon "Look Pong" Punyabhuti. Music and Look Pong were co-contestants in the fourth season of talent quest Academy Fantasia.

However, Poy insisted she had not acted as a third hand in trying to upset their relationship.

"Music has told me that he's just friends with her, too. I didn't ask Music if Look Pong was his girlfriend," Poy stressed. "He just told me one day." She would maintain their friendship as if nothing had changed, as Music was a good friend who behaved like a gentleman.

Journalists are keen to find a mate for Poy, who regularly appears in bikini spreads for fashion magazines.

Many men regard Poy as more beautiful than the real thing, but Poy also knows that some potential admirers are reluctant to get too close to someone they might still view as a former man.

"When I went to Australia for eight days recently, I didn't see him, but we still spoke every day by phone," she said. -

It's enough to make parents cry. Model/singer Somchai "Tao" Kemklat, who married a Bangkok woman in a lightning wedding last month, says they knew each other for three months, and were a couple for just 14 days before they tied the knot.

Tao married marketing executive Athamart "Yui" Attsawawimol at the registry, taking his own former girlfriend, who thought they were still going steady, by surprise.

When Tao told Yui's parents that he wanted her hand, her mother started to cry, Yui reveals in an interview with Dichan magazine.

"We invited them to a meal with the intention of breaking the news. But when the moment came I lost my nerve, so we just sat there looking at each other," says Yui.

In the end, Tao told them himself. "Mama, Papa, Yui and I have decided to have a family. We want to be together." Yui says her mum was shocked, and started to cry.

Tao, 36, known as the bad boy of Chiang Mai, has moved to Bangkok to start a new life, but still has an outstanding assault case hanging over him after a drunken night in Lampang last January. Two years ago, he was convicted on another assault charge.

"My parents asked if we weren't rushing it. I told them we didn't come to ask their permission, just to let them know," says Yui, also 36.

Yui says she is aware of Tao's bad reputation, feels sorry for him, and wants to protect him. However, she hasn't tried steering him away from the booze.

"Actually, when we saw each other in the early days, we were both drunk every night," she says.

People have left the couple their best wishes on webboards, and say they sound well suited. After their lightning wedding they plan a proper ceremony in the coming weeks.
