Mystery bumps, lumps and unfortunate stars

Mor Krit
Mystery pregnancies to a former prime minister? Ovarian cysts, traffic accidents, liver trouble?

Fortune tellers are shaking up celebrities with their predictions of what lie in store for their fame, families, and love lives.

Most stars claim they are sceptics, but are quick to change their behaviour if a noted fortune teller says they are headed for bad luck.

Most popular seer to the stars is Mor Krit Confirm (real name, Sukrit Patumsriwiroj), 22, now a star in his own right.

Rival seers have threatened to put him out of business, and challenged him to match forecasting wits on television.

Some stars hate him for what he says about them in public, but seek out his advice in spite of themselves.

Latest: Mor Krit declared that pop singer Saranrat "Lydia" Wisutthithada, a close friend of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, is pregnant.

In the Thai press, rumours swirled claiming Thaksin divorced his wife, Potjaman, this month so he could marry Lydia and raise her baby.

Suttipong 'Chompoo Fruity' Wattanajung, an executive from Lydia's record label, RS Promotions, denied the star was pregnant, and told Thais to stop gossiping. "If Mor Krit cares to lay a wager with me as to whether Lydia's really pregnant, he's welcome," he told Kom Chad Luek newspaper.

Mor Krit also offered advice to actor Kanchai "Noom" Kamnerdploy - whom another fortune teller upset by suggesting his stars were no good (see next story).

Mor Krit warned that family members were cheating him of an inheritance. In response, Noom sent in people to negotiate over his father's estate. At Mor Krit's urging he will also make merit to improve his luck.

Mor Krit, never publicity shy, says Noom now sees him in a different light.

"On television, Noom went off-script to ask me for a prediction. I made a forecast about Noom's Mum. Judging by her stars, she is not his real Mum. I also predicted someone would try to cheat him.

"After hearing my prediction he looked into the matter and discovered he was indeed being exploited. He went from hating me - if we had met earlier, he would have hit me - to being grateful."

Among Mor Krit's other predictions:

Grammy singer Pirath "Mike" Nitipaisalkul, of Golf and Mike fame, can expect a leaked videoclip or salacious news about his exploits in bed to emerge from mid-year to August next year.

Tennis star Paradorn "Ball" Srichapan and his wife Natalie Glebova will have a child, but their marriage is unlikely to last beyond six years.

Singer Tata Young and former betrothed Prem Busarakamwong, who have called off their engagement, will never get back together, as she prefers foreigners.-

Stephan
Actor Salamone "Stephan" Weeraboonchai is in a hurry to get a new name, after a seeing-eye doctor urged him to change it, or risk meeting a horrible fate.

Stephan consulted his girlfriend's fortune teller, who said his name could bring him bad luck. He could end up in jail, destitute, or gay.

"You won't die easily, but you might end up as a cripple in a motor accident. You will live a life of misery," the cheery fortune teller told him.

After turning 25, which Thais regard as a turning point in their lives, Stephan quit driving for 12 months, just to be on the safe side.

Previously, Stephan has fretted about what his genes could bring him - most relatives of his parents' generation died of cancer.

Media reports said the fortune teller likened Stephan's sorry stars to those of actors Kanchai "Noom" Kamnerdploy and Somchai "Tao" Kemklat, notorious Romeos who fall in and out of love. By implication, the fortune teller was predicting bad things would happen to them.

Noom took offence, saying he ran a successful business coupled with his show business career, and was cautious by nature. "The only person likely to die a horrible death is fortune tellers who get shot in the mouth for their predictions.

"Fortune tellers need ethics. Forecasting someone will die a horrible death is unethical."

Stephan says he did not mean to imply that Noom had poor stars.

"If my stars were as good as Noom's, I wouldn't mind...I actually didn't refer to him. The mor doo [fortune teller] mentioned Noom in passing, but did not say that my stars and his are the same.

"I don't place too much faith in these forecasts, but the mor doo knew things about my family that only insiders know. It's like he saw it with his own eyes."-

Aof
Channel 7 rising star Chanapol "Aof" Sataya plans to spend the next month indoors, after a fortune teller likened his stars to those of John Delan, a Thai actor who died in a 1995 traffic accident when his car flipped on the way back to Bangkok from Pattaya.

Aof's career may be on the rise, but bad luck has also paid a visit this year. In late August, Aof needed urgent surgery on his lung, after it collapsed while he was working on a television drama. In October, he was filming in Rayong when he was involved in a minor motor accident.

Aof says he will try to avoid driving from now on, after a mor doo - who told his fortune while he was in hospital - predicted he would encounter more trouble on the roads in December.

He intends to spend next month confined to home. To improve his chances, Aof has also made merit by donating coffins to the needy, and paid to release captive birds to freedom. -

Chompoo
Actress Araya "Chompoo" A Hargate is leaving nothing to chance. After celebrity fortune-teller Mor Krit predicted she would develop ovarian cysts, she raced to the doctor to get a check-up.

In more bad news for the Channel 3 star, Mor Krit also predicted Chompoo would suffer a minor loss of fame in 18 months, probably because of a love affair which knocks her reputation.

Chompoo says the doctor found nothing. However, she will go for a physical every six months, up from once a year now, just to be safe.

Mor Krit insists she will get the cysts, on her right side. He also forecasts more bad news about her Dad, who has heart trouble.

"I predicted on television that he will also encounter problems with his liver. After the show, Chompoo spoke to me personally. I told her February and September are the risk-months for him over the next two years," he said.

Chompoo says she stopped seeing fortune tellers two years ago, but does not belittle what they have to offer. 'It is better to know these things than not to know. You can take precautions.

"The question is whether you can rise to challenges which life throws you. Even if you know what lies ahead, how well you cope will dependon your experience, your character. Ultimately it's up to us. That'swhy I don't rush about consulting fortune tellers any more."

Actress Metinee "Look Keht" Kingpoyom is four months' pregnant, she told fans this week, adding that she refused to say anything earlier in the belief it would bring bad luck to her baby.

When journalists asked her if she was expecting, she would decline to say. This week, the spell was broken, as she now comments openly.

Look Keht says she is working less, and has developed an appetite for sour food, but apart from that has noticed no other change as a result of her pregnancy.

The actress, whose husband is Caucasian, says she refused to confirm speculation about her pregnancy any earlier because farang believe that to spill the beans too soon brings bad luck.

On the internet, sniffy Thais ask if she is getting ideas above herself. "If you want to be a farang, then why don't you go and live there?" they ask.

Others are surprised to hear that farang bother with such suspicions. "So farang, who come across as so confident, at a deep level get scared too," says one reader.

However, one Thai writing from Australia says sensible reasons underlie the belief, which is no mere superstition.

"As soon as Thais get pregnant, they race to tell everyone. Farang wait until the first three months are over, as that is the period when the pregnancy is most at risk. After three months, it is much safer.

"If the pregnancy fails, they can grieve quietly among themselves, rather than having to broadcast the news to everyone later why the pregnancy failed."
