Fang bites back, Chompoo's second chance, Ice alive and kicking

Joyride drama doesn't end well

Fang

A Chiang Mai woman says she is mulling laying a police complaint after a mechanic from a motor repair shop took her Mini Cooper for a joyride up a mountain and tried charging her for the privilege.

Fang, writing on the Facebook site strawmushroom, said she was stunned to find the man to whom she entrusted her beloved car, "Nong Cream", which she left for repairs months before, taking his girlfriend for a spin in the vehicle.

The unidentified mechanic last Sunday uploaded to Facebook pictures and video of himself and the young woman on a day trip to Mon Chaem mountain in the province.

In one picture, he boasts about how police stopped him at every checkpoint on their journey to complain about the speed at which he was taking corners. In another, taken on Oct 13, his girlfriend asks to be taken on a day trip in the vehicle. He is also shown presenting her with a bouquet of flowers on bended knee as she sits in the driver’s seat.

Fang, who has attained a measure of celebrity as she chronicled her battle to get back her car, uploaded a clip to Facebook to complain about the incident.

She said a friend sent her pictures of the vehicle with the mechanic at the wheel. Not knowing who he was, her friend assumed she must have sold the vehicle.

"I just wanted to cry. They opened the roof to admire the view. Did they drive it carefully the way I do? Did they share kisses in my car, trample on the seats? What did they do in there?" Fang asked.

The repair shop hadn’t contacted her in many months since she left it there for repairs on its electronics. She contacted the firm when she discovered the mechanic had been out in her car. By then, her video complaint about the incident had hit the news. The owner refused to let her pick up the vehicle until she took down her clip and declared her complaint stemmed from a "misunderstanding".

"They also claimed they hadn’t yet finished the repairs, yet when contacted by the media, told them work on the vehicle only took a month and they had left it parked in the yard for four months after that. So which is it?" she said, adding she believed they may also have taken her vehicle on trips to Chiang Rai and Bangkok.

Reports say the repair bill came to more than 50,000 baht, including a 2,500 baht charge for petrol. Fang said the mechanic tried to charge her for his day trip to the mountain, though the repair firm insisted the petrol charge actually covered their travel costs on the day they went to pick up the car in Mae Hong Son after it broke down.

Speaking to reporters, the owner admitted repair staff had taken out the vehicle, but claimed they had to take it out for a long-distance test drive to make sure the vehicle was OK.

Reporters who visited the workshop, on the Chiang Mai-Mae On district road, said they found plenty of cars, mainly European makes, waiting for repairs. The owner said he had "reached an understanding" with Fang’s mother and boyfriend when her side finally picked up the vehicle on Wednesday and did not want to comment further on the drama.

Writing later on Facebook, Fang said she will take the vehicle to a major repair centre for another look. If the firm which handled the repairs hadn’t done a proper job, she would lay a complaint.

"I will also sprinkle holy water on it, and change the seats. I put up my post to serve as a warning to others. Really, I would be happy to drop the matter if they offered an apology," she said.

Netizens, who slammed the repairer’s professional ethics, have deluged the firm’s Facebook site with complaints. Reports say the owner has since closed the site. -

2. Actress tries for pregnancy again

Chompoo
Actress Chompoo Araya Hargate and her husband are trying a second time to start a family after losing their first unborn child to miscarriage.

Chompoo, who married millionaire businessman Nott Witsarut last year, says she pulled out of a soap opera in February after discovering she was pregnant.

She later lost their unborn child, which she attributes to natural causes. However, her doctor said she was in fine health and she and Nott are now trying again. Chompoo, who said the loss knocked her life off balance, opened up about her ordeal in an interview with Hamburger magazine last week.

At the time she pulled out of the soap opera, Ra Rengfai, she told reporters she wanted to start a family, and was trying to scale down her work commitments.

Chompoo was to star alongside actor Theeradej "Ken" Wongpuapan, whose wife, Butsakorn "Noi" Wongpuapan, directed the soap. After Chompoo pulled out, Noi found another actress to replace her.

The actress said she did not feel comfortable about discussing her pregnancy with the media at the time.

However, she did tell Ken and Noi, who were sympathetic when she told them she wanted to pull out, even though it caused them bother. "It was difficult for them, as shooting on the soap had already started," she said.

Asked later about Chompoo’s remarks, director Noi said the actress called her in tears a couple of weeks later to say she had lost the child.

"I consoled her saying I had also been through a miscarriage. She didn’t do anything wrong. It’s a natural thing and he [the unborn child] may not have been ready to join us yet," she said.

Chompoo said the experience of miscarriage was worse than heartbreak. "Before, I never felt ready for the word ‘mother’, but the first day I tried on a maternity dress, it came all at once. I never felt scared or thought it was beyond me. I really felt good about it.

"I told Nott I was pregnant, and forbade him from telling anyone. When he found out he cried, and he’s not a man easily brought to tears. I was delighted I could make him feel so happy.

"When I found out I had miscarried, it knocked me sideways, but Nott had to stay strong. The first thing he asked the doctor was when we would get the chance to have a baby again. We are trying again. Last time it was just a natural occurrence, and can happen to anyone." -

3. Singer sick of death hoaxes

Ice
Singer Saranyu "Ice" Winaipanit, a victim of repeated internet hoaxes claiming he is dead, says the latest one might be inspired by his near-death experience in Oman.

Ice came forward last week to assure fans he was still alive, after an internet site published a bogus news report claiming he had gone missing, presumed drowned, while on an adventure tourism trip. His mother sent down divers to look for him, without success, the story claimed.

Ice said the bogus story recalls a real-life near-drowning incident in Oman earlier this year which he visited on holiday with his mother.

The intrepid singer, who aims to visit 120 countries and has made it to 56 so far, said he wanted to visit a moonlit-waterfall in the middle of a valley.

"Visitors have to trek, swim and pass through a narrow channel in a cave to reach it. I was a strong swimmer at primary school so was confident I could swim it, even though I hadn’t been near water in a long time," Ice said.

"I had to swim past this narrow opening, and the water was very deep. I could only hang on to the walls of the cave, and they were covered in moss, so my hand slipped off. Far from swimming like a champ, I ended up sinking and went under for 10 seconds. It was agony, and I choked on lots of water. Luckily a guide pulled me out."

Ice said his mother went ahead to the waterfall by safer means. He said the experience had taught him to take greater care of himself.

"As for the death hoaxes, can I just say people shouldn’t go placing curses on people," he said.

"If we think on the positive side, we’re all likely to live longer."
