Cancer scare a rude awakening
Actress Pimmada "Pim" Boriruksuppakorn admits she took a course on
how to prepare for dying after finding out she has stage one ovarian
cancer.Pim, 35, who opened up about her experience with cancer last week, said doctors discovered a large growth in her ovaries last October, and sent her for surgery.
"The doctor operated immediately to remove the growth, and told me to stop all kinds of work. I felt OK, not too scared," she said.
"Once they cut it out, I thought that would be the end of it. But the growth was large, about 18cm. The doctor sent it for analysis and when it came back told me I had cancer. I felt numb, in shock all over.
"Before they cut it out, it was self-contained. Once they removed it, there was a chance of the cells spreading. The doctor said if I treat it now, I should lead a long life. But if I turned down treatment, he couldn't guarantee my chances beyond five years.
"My family and friends agreed I should go for chemo. It was a hard time. My hair fell out easily. When I sat in front of the fan, it would blow away. I wore a wig under my hat, but was afraid people would notice. I cried and cried, as I was afraid of losing my looks.
"I want to be around a long time; I don't want it to end here. I was scared of chemo but told myself if I can put up with it, soon it will be gone."
Pim has taken five of the six doses of chemotherapy recommended by doctors. She takes her last treatment on March 1. Doctors say she can still have children, as only one of her ovaries was removed. She has now returned to work, swapping acting for directing.
Pim also revealed she had taken a course on facing up to death with a peaceful heart, which ironically has made her appreciate the value of life more.
"Every day we have a chance to do good works and be with the people who love us. We love them and they see their lives have value. If one day the cancer comes back, I might be sick but happy.
"Preparing to die is not to cast a curse on yourself. It is a way to accept the thing which none of us ultimately can escape," she said, adding she also started meditating to take her mind stronger. -
2. Expectant mum Lydia lashes detractors
Lydia |
Lydia, who is expecting her first child in July with husband Matthew Deane, wrote a stiffly worded message to critics who say she risks the health of her unborn child if she puts too much strain on her body.
The images show her performing routines in the gym, involving yoga positions, exercise ropes, a treadmill, and weights.
"A mother has to be strong. A pregnant woman is not a sick one. I am not overdoing it," she said on Instagram.
"I am not lifting the weights too high. If you are not a doctor, kindly refrain from offering advice. Thanks for being concerned, but I am educating myself. Don't turn it into a drama," she added.
Lydia, a well-known fitness enthusiast, also appeared on prime-time TV last week with Matthew and her foreigner trainer to extol the benefits of exercising when pregnant.
Asked to comment on the fuss, actor Deane said her trainer, who has looked after many women who carry on working out while pregnant, says exercise helps a woman prepare for labour, and ensures a quick recovery from childbirth.
"People who don't exercise every day might be in shock to see a pregnant woman pushing weights. But if you look carefully, you will see the weights she is lifting are just 2.5kg each.
"Lydia has consulted a doctor on everything, from the food she should take, to sleep, and the activities she can safely do while pregnant.
"Her message might sound on the strong side, but she went to an international school so speaks directly," he said, denying reporters’ claims Lydia was getting emotional as a result of pregnancy. "Her emotions aren't volatile."
As the big day approaches, Lydia, who declared "fit pregnant women are inspirational", is educating the public about pregnancy on a wide array of fronts. In a recent interview she was asked if a pregnant woman can carry on having sex.
Avowing they can carry on right up to term, Lydia dismissed fears that a pregnant woman's partner could end up stabbing the unborn child in the head with his penis.
"The child is inside an amniotic bag, and the mother's ovaries add another level of protection," she said.
"The two have nothing to do with each other. That doesn't mean everyone can have sex ... some mothers have low-hanging placentas. They should consult a doctor." -
3. Actress plays down romance rumours
Actress Napapa "Pat" Thantrakul, 29, is playing down rumours of a budding romance with footballer Atit Daosawang, who is keen to get to know her better after sending a large bunch of roses on Valentine's Day.
Pat, who is flavour of the month romantically after an ill-fated union with a young man from the city slums boosted her profile, on Friday confirmed speculation she and Atit, better known as "Back", have been getting to know each other.
Last week, Pat posted a picture of the flowers on Instagram, tacked to "PB", which media reports said refer to the first initial of their names.
However, many members of Pat's fan club initially assumed they were from singer and actor Pakin "Tono" Kumvilaisak, another admirer who has come forward in recent weeks. A fan club has sprung up in their names with netizens casting them as an "ideal couple", though she and Tono insist they are just friends.
Pat, a fan of young men on fast bikes, has poor, self-described street racer Thanapol "Jack" Tayahan, 20, to thank for raising her profile after their secret nine-month relationship ended up with a soi-style fight between her family and his new girlfriend’s supporters.
The highly publicised fight in Bang Kho Laem district on Jan 2 was caught on video and led to legal action, with both sides laying charges of assault. Since she broke up with Jack, Pat says a rash of young men have approached her to size up their prospects. Among them are Tono, and now Back.
The footballer, who plays for Muang Thong United, recently left a romantic message on Instagram, tagged to Pat. "There's something in the air ... that makes me miss a certain someone," he wrote.
On Friday he finally came clean, admitting he sent the roses, and adding he and Pat had been out for a meal. He was interested in getting to know her further, though at the moment they are just friends.
"She is someone who if you don't know her, you'd think was haughty, but she's actually very simple, like the girl next door. We have known each other about a month, introduced by a friend," he said.
"If P' Pat is free, I would like to invite her to watch me play. She can also join me on the field. I hope we get the chance," he added.
Pat is taking a more cautious approach to news of their budding union, saying Back asked if he could tag the message to her. "I am sure he sends many messages just like that one to people he admires," she said.
