On-again off-again deal, When porsche comes to shove, Farang stabs deejay

Nathan
Accused fraudster and former singer Nathan Oman agreed to pay back the debt he owes - only to withdraw the pledge a day later, says his chief complainant, Saman Sukserm.

Nathan and Mrs Saman met at the Amnat Charoen court on Feb 5 in a bid to settle their debt row. Mrs Saman claims she lent 300,000 baht to Nathan last year, which he refused to pay back. With interest, it has ballooned to 740,000 baht, putting family property which she mortgaged to help Nathan at risk.

She laid a complaint with police. Prosecutors in her home province of Amnat Charoen are now prosecuting him for fraud.

Nathan went to the meeting with Mrs Saman alone. His lawyer and foster mother, who usually accompany him on his sorties to court, were absent.

Mrs Saman
Also present at the meeting were Mrs Saman's lawyer, the prosecutor and a court conciliator. Mrs Saman told the Manager newspaper that Nathan offered her the 100,000 baht which his foster mother had previously put up to secure his bail, and his car, by way of repaying the debt.

''If you take it to the finance company, they can give you 300,000 baht straight away,'' he said. In return, he asked Mrs Saman to withdraw her complaint.

Mrs Saman refused, as the amount of money which Nathan offered still fell short of what she needed to pay debts incurred on his behalf.

She asked him for the money she needed to redeem several plots of land in danger of being sold by creditors. The total came to 350,000 baht, which is still short of the total debt.

''That's more than we ever talked about previously,'' complained Nathan.

Mrs Saman said: ''The court conciliator asked Nathan if he admitted owing me money, despite claims he made earlier that it was me who owed him money.

''He admitted owing me the debt, pledged to repay it, and pick up the interest bill if he could not repay all of it immediately.''

The two reached a deal after hours of talks. The court asked Nathan to come back on Feb 22 to sign an agreement.

Nathan asked Mrs Saman not to talk to the media. Mrs Saman said she herself said nothing, but her lawyer made a brief comment to reporters, which upset him.

''The next day, he called to say everything that we agreed was now off. In a panic, I asked the prosecutor what to do next.

He assured me not to worry. He said Nathan had admitted before the court that he owes me money, and has pledged to repay it. Having given his word, he can't just scrap the agreement,'' she said.

This was the second meeting between the pair since the court agreed to hear the case. Late last month, the court called them together for pre-trial conciliation talks.

They failed to reach a deal, so the court asked them to come back on Feb 22 for one last try. Mrs Saman said if Nathan fails to come up with the money as promised, the trial will go ahead.

Nathan faces the prospect of an 18-year year jail term (three years for each of six counts of fraud) if he is found guilty.

In their talks, Nathan asked Mrs Saman to reduce her demand to 670,000 baht, after a lawyer on her side donated 76,000 baht to help her reclaim one piece of land.

Nathan told the court that his foster mother was mortgaging a piece of land to raise the money, and had also asked her relatives to help. He himself was out work.

The day after he is supposed to pay Mrs Saman, police in Bangkok want him to answer charges on another fraud matter.

Nathan is accused of lying about his age to fraudulently obtain a 2006 outstanding youth award. The Department for Social Development and Human Security is taking legal action against the former singer, and has laid a complaint with the Metropolitan Police.

Nathan has been called twice to hear the charges - on Feb 5 and Feb 16 - but his lawyer called to say Nathan was tied up with his case in Amnat Charoen.

Police say that unless he comes up with a good reason, he will be expected to answer the charges on Feb 23.

Meanwhile, Grammy singer James Ruangsak has come forward with a new tale alleging fraud against Nathan.

After leaving the entertainment industry a few years ago, Nathan told friends he had set up a company offering guided tours to Nepal. Nathan, who claims he is half Thai, half Nepalese, contacted James' girlfriend, now fiancee, Sasikarn ''Ae'' Apichartworasil when he heard that she and a video production team were travelling to Nepal.

Ae, who planned to shoot a music video in Nepal, signed a contract with Nathan. When she arrived, however, she found no one there to meet her. James had just set up a music company, and singer Ae was his first choice for the trip to Nepal. At the time, he didn't want negative publicity, so said nothing about what happened.

''Seven people were left without work. We were duped, though at the time we didn't want to make it public,'' he said. -

May
Actress Pitchanat 'May'' Sakakorn wants to get rid of her black Porsche, because it reminds her of her old boyfriend.

May bought the Porsche from car dealer and socialite Wuthisak ''Price'' Inthornpuwisak when they were still at item. "I wanted to support his company, so bought the car from him,'' she said.

''I was in love, and I wanted to go racing in it. Now, I longer care whether I drive the thing or not.

''But whenever the car needs to go in for repairs, I have to call my old boyfriend, as the parts are hard to find elsewhere. It's not that I cannot stand to contact him, but it is awkward. Price tells me to bring it in. He gives me a cut-price repair deal, but it's still expensive.

''Whenever I try to sell it, someone comes along and offers me work. Function organisers want me to display the car, so I never get around to selling the thing,'' she told Thai Rath newspaper.

''The car is not moody, and brings me a regular source of income. She has been with me three years. However, my new boyfriend doesn't like sitting in the thing, as he knows I bought it from Price.

''It's better if I sell it, even though I have almost finished paying it off. I am paying 60,000-70,000 baht a month. It's the last time I get involved in supporting my boyfriends, as it's just too awkward. From now on, it's each man for himself,'' she said. -

Nui

Presenter and DJ Tannawat ''Nui'' Prasithisomporn is wondering if farang have it in for him, after a knife owned by one stabbed him in the back.
Nui, an outspoken host of a TV entertainment news show, and now a DJ and fledgling actor, was tucking into a meal at an eatery in Khao San Road when a foreigner wearing a backpack brushed past.

The edge of a knife which the foreigner was carrying in his backpack slipped out, and pierced Nui in the back.

Nui, who appears in the movie My Valentine, out this month, had just appeared on a TV show to promote the movie with co-star Mintita ''Mint'' Wattanakul. They decided to stop for a quick bite in the Phra Athit area on the way home.

They were squeezed into a tight area, which might explain how the knife wound was more serious than a mere scrape. At first, Nui felt little pain, but according to media reports, the farang went pale.

He apologised profusely when he saw what he had done. ''I told him, 'Never mind - enjoy Thailand!''' said Nui.

Gossip Star magazine says that as blood started to flow from his back wound, extrovert Nui passed out. Actress Mint, who witnessed the accident, did the same.

Nui's production team took the pair to hospital. Nui needed seven stitches in his back, but was declared safe. The next day, he went back to work.

''It was nothing, and I don't harbour any grudge. A farang just stabbed me in the back,'' he said.
